Lower Paleolithic quartzite pebble chopper-core, 78mm long, 46mm wide and 39mm thick. The stone weighs 171grams and has been worked from three angles to remove at least 9 flakes to form a triangular point which appears to have some wear.
We refer to these as chopper-cores as we can't be certain whether the whole object is being used or the flakes are being used as cutting tools.
The object is part of a growing number of Quartzite tools which are being found in this area. Leicestershire museums holds the important Waite Collection of pebble tools which was found along, the Leicest…

Lower Palaeolithic quartzite handaxe (probable), 70mm in length, 66mm in width and 35mm thick with a weight of over 100grams. The object is oval in form with a sub-triangular cross section with a reddish brown patina. Its flatter surface has some original surface intact with a few shallow removals. The other surface has semi abrupt removals creating a ridge down its centre with a slight point at each end. This object may be linked to a number of quartzite handaxes recorded by the PAS, for example WMID-49DD1B.

Flint prepared core from which a Levallois flake has been struck, 60mm long, 50mm wide and 12mm thick. The object is sub rectangular in form and cross section with a creamy patina. It sides bear truncated flake scars showing how the core was prepared prior to the removal a single flake, the dorsal surface of which had been shaped to form one face of the implement. The removal of this flake has left a large flake scar. The other face of the core bears signs of working but not using the Levallois technique. Dr Nick Ashton commented that nearly all of the Levallois in Britain is Early Mi…

Middle Paleolithic flint discoid hand axe, 84mm long, 71mm wide and 22mm thick with a weight of over 100grams. The object has a D shaped form with a flat striking platform? with intact cortex as a base. It has semi- invasive, scaled re-touch on both surfaces with semi-abrupt stepped re touch along its edge on one surface.
The shield shaped form of this axe with straight edge flanked by two corners is typical of the Bout Coupe axes associated with the Middle Palaeolithic Mousterian industry. However the lack of patination would not support such an early date. It is,however, possible…

The cutting edge is unmodified whereas the opposing lateral edge has recieved some semi-abrupt retouch. The right lateral edge does retain most of its cortex. The dorsal face otherwise shows the evidence for orthogonal working. The flint is semi-translucent caramel brown with areas of opaque light brown patination.
