Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic end scraper knapped from a quartzite Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The scraper is a sub-oval with the ventral surface having a possibly two flake scars at the proximal end, the scar has a step fracture. The dorsal surface has flake removal at the distal end which abrupt re-touch with at least four flake removals to form the scraping edge. There are no visible hammerstone marks on the surface, but the scraper is heavily rolled, therefore the flake scar edges are very blunt and curved. The scraper measures 72.99mm long, 68.01mm wide, 33.47mm thick and …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic bi-facial chopper knapped from a quartzite cobble from the Triassic period. The chopper is an sub-oval with flakes being removed from one terminal. One face has three flake scars and the other face at least two, but the details are not clear due to encrustation on the surface. There is only one hammerstone mark visible along an edge where a flake has been removed from the other face. The chopper has been very rolled, therefore the scar edges are rounded. The chopper measures 103.71mm long, 70.71mm wide, 43.68mm thick and weighs 462g. The object has been i…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. A large flake scar covers the majority of one surface. The rounded edge of this flake scar is rounded, whereas other flake scars are fresher. This flake is horizontal, and along one side edge there is an obliquely angled fresher flake at the terminal of the cobble. This is one flake scar of three radiating from a striking platform at this terminal. There are two other, small flake scars which are positioned at the striking platfo…

Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a Bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. A large flake scar covers one surface. The striking platform for this flake removal was created by a medium sized flake being removed at right-angles. One terminal has had further flakes removed, at least three flakes which are contemporary to the first two. There is a smaller more recent flake scar at this terminal, but on the opposite face to the others. This scar has developed the same patina on the unworked surface as the oth…

Lower Palaeolithic core knapped from a bunter cobble from the Triassic period. The core is an irregular shape and has had flakes removed from multiple faces. Eight flakes have been removed revealing a mid brown-grey colour with an external surface being a mid brown colour. The edges of the scars are still fresh, suggesting it has not been rolled or weathered. There are two parallel larger scars which provides the striking platform for at least four others scars which are therefore perpendicular to the larger scar forming the striking platform. At the proximal end of the larger scars, …

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lower Palaeolithic (c.800,000-180,000 BC) bifacially worked andesite tuff handaxe. It is pointed in form with a pointed oval in cross-section. The tip is truncated, the surface of the truncation matches that of the rest of the axe, so is therefore not recent. The butt is slightly pointed, but off-centre. Both faces have covering, low angled and scalar retouch, although one lateral edge is a single abrupt face, which may be due to damage rather than design, although the surface condition and colouring matches that of the rest of the axe. The surface of the axe shows some patinat…
