An incomplete Lower Palaeolithic small, bifacially worked, flint handaxe of cordate type dating c. 400,000-150,000BC. The handaxe was found on the foreshore and consequently is rolled and abraded with a small amount of edge damage. There is invasive soft hammer flaking covering both faces. The butt and mid portion of the axe is thick and it then tapers to a rounded point. The cross section is lentoid (pointed oval). The flint has an orange patina. There is some damage to the butt with two large flakes missing. The patina has reformed over one of these suggesting the damage occured in …

An upper palaeolithic flint sub-cordate handaxe, dating 40,000-10,001BC. This is a flaked axehead. There is extensive flake removal on both the dorsal and ventral surfaces; there is an area of cortex covering approximately one third of the dorsal surface, the butt and a smaller section of the ventral surface. The axehead is sub-triangular in plan and it is an irregular oval in cross-section. This axehead has been rolled and there is some damage to the edges and point. The flint is glossy, dark grey. Dimensions: length: 80.15mm; width: 68.01mm; thickness: 22.46mm; weight: 138.35g. …

A Palaeolithic flint biface dating 400,000 - 10,000BC. This biface is triangular in plan with a rounded butt and rounded tip. There is some irregularity in the flint at the butt which seems to be eroded fossils. Flake removal scars cover both the dorsal and ventral surfaces. Approximately midway along the left hand edge there is curved indent with further retouch which has been worked from the dorsal surface. There is also some more modern edge damage. The flint has a brown/dark grey patina. Dimensions: length: 96.48 mm; width: 70.50mm; thickness: 28.98mm; weight: 178.84g. I…

A Lower Palaeolithic flint lithic implement: biface dating 500,000 - 40,000BC. This tool has a pointed oval shape with an angular notch in one side. The notch is a result of thermal fracture but the knapper has worked around this in the process of creating the biface. The tool has no cortex remaining and flake removal scars cover both surfaces. There is evidence of more concentrated working along the left edges on both surfaces. The flint is pale grey with an orange patina. The edges are still sharp and there is very little damage or evidence of rolling. Dimensions: lengt…

A Prehistoric flint scraper. This is a secondary flake with approximately 10% of the cortex remaining on the dorsal surface and approximately 1% on the ventral surface. There are several flake removal scars on the dorsal surface but some of these will be due to later damage. The flake is roughly triangular in plan with the butt forming a point and the proximal end forming a wide edge. There is some retouch along the proximal edge. There may also be some working around the left proximal corner creating a point which could work as a borer or awl. The flint is dark grey and glossy.…
