A Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe, probably dating to c. 500,000-40,000 BC. The handaxe is ovate in plan and broadly pointed-oval in cross section, in profile it is very broadly piriform, thicker near the base, although tapering to point at both ends. The cutting edges are largely straight with no evidence of tranchet removals. The handaxe has a trimmed and rounded butt, and a basal point. The surface of the flint is orange/brown mottled with darker areas, at more recent chips the flint can be seen to be a fairly pale orange/brown, almost chert-like material. The tool has been bifaci…
