Large flint hand-axe, squat ovate form. Rolled and abraded condition. Stained deep mid and dark brown, with a recent chip from one edge revealing pale grey flint beneath. Lower (early) Palaeolithic, c. 500,000 BC to 40,000 BC.

Ovate handaxe, broken at one end in antiquity. Glossy red/brown stained flint with a large number of coarse-grained inclusions. An old but thinly patinated chip indicates that the flint is probably pale grey in colour. One face is flaked all over; the opposed face is more than 50% cortex, which is thick but weathered, of a buff colour with black speckled staining. Dimensions: 124 mm surviving length, 85 mm wide and 30 mm thick. Condition: lightly rolled. Wymer does not list any Palaeolithic material from the immediate area, but gives examples of handaxes from Belton Common and Hopton-…
