Toffee coloured clouded and opaque flint. Knife. Narrow rod shaped blade. Four very long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect confer an angular plano-convex profile; very faint rippling on the ventral side shows where the flake was detached from a core. Some slight abrasions along the edge have been smoothed. Though the object has a glossy surface overall, possibly a result of curation in antiquity, the context could equally suggest this appealing finish to be the result of wave action. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'An interesting object. Without retouch t…

Pale grey flint possible point. Possible Mousterian point. A sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from the dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface; despite its suspected manufacture by the Levallois technique the flake is of a thin lentoid or oval section. Thick white patina has developed over all surfaces. Suggested date: Middle Palaeolithic, 150,000-40,000 BC. Length: 83.9mm, Width: 50.3mm, Thickness: 11.5mm, Weight: 40.59gms

Toffee coloured flint with cortex possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder. A large irregular flake with a broad flake removal scar on its dorsal side and an angled striking platform adjacent to a bulbar ventral surface. The opposite, straight, end may be trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The surface is weathered and battered. This reporter would welcome better-informed comment than his own on this object. Suggested date: possibly Middle Palaeolithic, 150,000-40,000 BC Length: 67.2mm, Width: 46mm, Thickness: 16.3mm, Weight: 45.16gms

Grey flint with cortex debitage. An irregular small chunk with broad flakes of cortex and a longer narrower flake trimmed by hard hammer from the dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. A dense creamy patina has developed over all struck surfaces, suggesting prolonged period of exposure to a calcareous environment; this is glossed, perhaps by wind-blown sand - 'desert gloss' - occurring in a periglacial environment. The patina has been removed by more recent and probably random impacts. Suggested date: Upper Palaeolithic, 40,000-10,000 BC Length: 48.9mm, Width: 29.6mm, Thic…

Flint debitage. A large curved flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a concave ventral surface. The surface bears dense buff-to-cream coloured patina overall, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The ventral surface bears metallic scratches. The finder reports the object was incorporated in the gravel base of an excavated Iron Age or Romano-British ditch, and he infers that the scratches are from the trowel cleaning of the ditch bottom. His own researches suggest the object form may be of Middle Palaeolit…

Flint possible edge-polished fragment. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. Though the putative cutting edge is crisp, the object is broken c.40mm behind it. All surfaces, including the putative fracture surface, are identically covered by a dense creamy patina and are iron stained, features suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment followed by incorporation in gravels. Iron stained flint possible hand axe. A sub-trapezoid nodule trimmed on all sides by hard hammer working which has removed large flakes. There is also a limited zone of battering or crushing at either end. The appearance of retouch noted by the finder may in most cases be ascribed to casual impacts rather than purposeful working. These scars, however, partake of the stained tint of the surface of the object, and must accordingly have arisen in deep antiquity. The edge or aris between faces is usually crisp. Suggested date: Middle to Upper Palaeolithic, 150,000-10,000 BC. Length: 90…

Orange-stained flint hand axe. A roughly semi-circular lentoid-section hand axe fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Two larger opposed smooth sides bear the worn scars from the removal of large flakes by angled hard hammer strike. These shallow drafts recur along a broad flat surface where the two sides meet, which is deemed reworking of an originally larger broken implement. More conspicuous conchoidal fracture sites appear in the main to have arisen from edge-on impacts, some possibly adventitious. They are, however, especially common where the two flat sides meet to form …

Pale cream-buff flint possible knife fragment. Sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and smooth across most of the ventral surface, save where interrupted by one long flake-removal scar. Short abrupt retouch or edge-on damage follows the longest edge. The straight upper edge [as illustrated] has the smooth edge of a positive hinge fracture on one side. Overall creamy patina and rust spotting may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravel. Now smooth to the touch, probably due to water-rolling. Patinated cream-coloured flint with iron staining, debitage. A flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. The surface colouration arises from rolling in gravels. An early date is suggested by the finder, comparing this surface with that of the many other dateable objects from the vicinity. Brown iron-stained flint with recently-reforming cortex, possible hand axe, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick chunk bearing scars from the removal of broad flakes by robust hard hammer working across one side and two long edges; part of one broad side is apparently left unworked. The object nevertheless sits comfortably in the hand if its ends are to be used for a vertical pounding action. Both ends show damage from relatively light battering. Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. Orange flint with brown shiny patches, possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder, probably with large flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer working. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest scraper to be reported from the vicinity. An early date is speculatively advanced. Suggested date: possibly Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC Length: 46.6mm, Width: 48.4mm, Thickness: 12mm, Weight: 20.89gms

Pale grey to brown flint or chert. Hand Axe. Bifacial symmetrical pointed hand axe of oval section, with a smooth butt formed of the natural cortex of a flint nodule. The flint was extensively worked with prominent conchoidal ripples suggesting the initial use of a hard hammer, reducing the size of what is in effect a core. To judge from the direction of the ripples, much of this working proceeded inwards from both edges of the tool. The marks of working are in general well defined. The original surface of the object is iron stained to a honey colour on one side, and s…

Dark grey flint with a small patch of uncoloured cortex and with iron staining on one side, hand axe. Bifacially worked oval axe of triangular profile and with a a broad base. Broad parallel flake removal scars from oblique soft hammer working appear on both its sides and across its base. The drafts of this initial working range from c.12 to c.26mm in width. Battered edge damage appears restricted to one edge and around the narrower end of the object.
