Orange flint with brown shiny patches, possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder, probably with large flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer working. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest scraper to be reported from the vicinity. The iron staining suggests the object has been incorporated into gravels; the finder kindly suggests an early date may be evidenced by the surface condition. Patinated cream-coloured flint with iron staining, debitage. A flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. The surface colouration arises from rolling in gravels. An early date is suggested by the finder, comparing this surface with that of the many other dateable objects from the vicinity. Toffee coloured flint with cortex possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder. A large irregular flake with a broad flake removal scar on its dorsal side and an angled striking platform adjacent to a bulbar ventral surface. The opposite, straight, end may be trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The surface is weathered and battered. Flint debitage. A large curved flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a concave ventral surface. The surface bears dense buff-to-cream coloured patina overall, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The ventral surface bears metallic scratches. The finder reports the object was incorporated in the gravel base of an excavated Iron Age or Romano-British ditch, and he infers that the scratches are from the trowel cleaning of the ditch bottom. Grey flint with cortex debitage. An irregular small chunk with broad flakes of cortex and a longer narrower flake trimmed by hard hammer from the dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. A dense creamy patina has developed over all struck surfaces, suggesting prolonged period of exposure to a calcareous environment; this is glossed, perhaps by wind-blown sand - 'desert gloss' - occurring in a periglacial environment. Toffee coloured clouded and opaque flint. Knife. Narrow rod shaped blade. Four very long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect confer an angular plano-convex profile; very faint rippling on the ventral side shows where the flake was detached from a core. Some slight abrasions along the edge have been smoothed. Though the object has a glossy surface overall, possibly a result of curation in antiquity, the context could equally suggest this appealing finish to be the result of wave action.
