Orange-stained flint hand axe. A roughly semi-circular lentoid-section hand axe fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Two larger opposed smooth sides bear the worn scars from the removal of large flakes by angled hard hammer strike. These shallow drafts recur along a broad flat surface where the two sides meet, which is deemed reworking of an originally larger broken implement. More conspicuous conchoidal fracture sites appear in the main to have arisen from edge-on impacts, some possibly adventitious. They are, however, especially common where the two flat sides meet to form …

Brown iron-stained flint with recently-reforming cortex, possible hand axe, as kindly identified by the finder. A thick chunk bearing scars from the removal of broad flakes by robust hard hammer working across one side and two long edges; part of one broad side is apparently left unworked. The object nevertheless sits comfortably in the hand if its ends are to be used for a vertical pounding action. Both ends show damage from relatively light battering. Suggested date: Lower Palaeolithic, 500,000-150,000 BC Length: 170mm, Width: 94mm, Thickness: 65mm, Weight: not measured, in exces…

Iron stained flint possible hand axe. A sub-trapezoid nodule trimmed on all sides by hard hammer working which has removed large flakes. There is also a limited zone of battering or crushing at either end. The appearance of retouch noted by the finder may in most cases be ascribed to casual impacts rather than purposeful working. These scars, however, partake of the stained tint of the surface of the object, and must accordingly have arisen in deep antiquity. The edge or aris between faces is usually crisp. Suggested date: Middle to Upper Palaeolithic, 150,000-10,000 BC. Length: 90…

Toffee coloured clouded and opaque flint. Knife. Narrow rod shaped blade. Four very long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect confer an angular plano-convex profile; very faint rippling on the ventral side shows where the flake was detached from a core. Some slight abrasions along the edge have been smoothed. Though the object has a glossy surface overall, possibly a result of curation in antiquity, the context could equally suggest this appealing finish to be the result of wave action. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'An interesting object. Without retouch t…
