A bi-facially worked flint implement. Probably a small handaxe. It is now cordate in shape, but the edge damage means this is not certain and it is possible it was originally a more Boute Coupé-like form. The handaxe has been made on a large flake of mid grey flint, giving it a plano-convex profile. There is heavy, off-white patination over both faces, that on the dorsal face is slightly thicker and more yellowed. There is iron staining along many of the flake ridges. There is a small area of basal cortex on the dorsal face. There are several areas of mo…

A flaked handaxe. A bout coupĂ© handaxe. The flint is dark brown and patinated to a glossy light orange-brown and cream. The flint is highly siliceous. There is an area of abraded thick nodule cortex on one side of the butt. The axe is sub-triangular or cordiform in plan, with a plano-convex cross section and a straight profile. One face has a large post-depositional thermal fracture scar (a "pot-lid" removal) which is patinated to a paler, more matt, off-white. There are also several thermal fracture lines visible on both faces. Both faces are covered in soft-hammer flake removals r…

A flint handaxe. A narrow, thick-butted handaxe made on a nodule of pale grey to mid-grey flint. The handaxe has been rolled and the small areas of cortex that r3emain are abraded. The surface has a low-gloss orange patina. It has been bifacially worked and has a plano-convex cross section. There are large shallow flaking scars along the long edges on both faces and a marked hinge fracture at one side on the planar face. The butt is thick and more steeply flaked. There are areas of abraded cortex on bot faces. One long edge is slightly curved and the other is straight. The wear and …

A crude, unifacially worked probable handaxe. Made on a large, natural flint flake. One face retains the naturally broken surface. There is a natural perpendicular break at one end, used to form the butt of the implement. The other face has crude covering flaking worked from the margins to form the sub-triangular shape. The surfaces are all heavily abraded with significant rolling abrasion to the flake scar ridges. It is heavily stained and repatinated to a dark orange brown. There is some post-depositional edge damage. Date: Lower to Middle Palaeolithic - c. 500000 to 40000 BC

A large flint blade flake or blade. A tertiary flake of heavily patinated and worn pale grey flint. The patina is matt and yellow-white. An elongate flake with a trapeziodal cross section. A wide striking platform at the proximal end and possibly broken distally. There is a wide bulb of percussion with radiating hackles at on the ventral face of the proximal end and widely space waves of percussion along the length. On the dorsal face are three main parallel flake removals and a smaller flake removal at the top. The patination is not typical of the usual calcareous Dorset soils. The e…

A large chert handaxe. An elongate cordate handaxe in toffee-coloured Greensand chert. It is bifacially worked all over with shallow, sometimes large invasive flaking and smaller edge-dressing. The axe has a well formed and generally straight mid-line cutting edge around its entire margin. There is a single large hinge fracture et the edge of the point where a flake removal has failed. On the opposite face there is also an area of step-fracturing as a result of the weakened platform. The handaxe is unrolled, although the cutting edges and flake scar ridges have been somewhat blunted b…

A large flint handaxe of sub-triangular shape. It is similar to, although less well defined than axes of the Boute CoupĂ© tradition. The flint is patchy brown and dark grey with some lighter cream coloured patches. The surface has a low gloss and some areas of milky-white patination. The axe tapers towards a rounded cutting edge with some recent damage. It is extensively bifacially flaked with wide scalar, low angle removals to thin the body of the axe. It has a plano-convex cross section. The side profile is straight. The butt of the axe is broad and has an area of modern damage at on…

A complete, small, bifacially worked, flint handaxe of cordate type. The handaxe was found on a beach and consequently is rolled and abraded with a small amount of edge damage. There is invasive soft hammer flaking covering both faces. The butt and mid portion of the axe is thick and it then tapers to a rounded point. The cross section is lentoid. The cutting edges are very straight. The flint has an orangey brown patina which is probably the result of secondary deposition in river gravel outwash. Date: Lower Palaeolithic - c. 500,000 to 150,000 BC Dimensions: 105 mm x 65 mm x 29 …

A probable handaxe. A pointed plano convex handaxe made on a large flake of orange-brown Greensand chert. A relatively small striking platform at the proximal end and a large diffuse bulb of percussion. The dorsal face has several flake removals along the edges, shaping it to a blunted point at the distal end and giving it a central longitudinal ridge producing a sub-triangular cross section. There is some recent edge damage and abrasion which is consistent with a beach findspot. Date: Probably Lower Palaeolithic - c. 500000 to 150000 BC Dimensions: 111 mm x 58.5 mm x 29 mm Weight: 179 g

A flaked handaxe. The flint is dark grey and patinated to a glossy off-white. The flint is highly siliceous with a few patches of more chalky composition. The axe is sub-triangular or cordiform in plan, with a plano-convex cross section and a straight profile. Both faces are covered in soft-hammer flake removals resulting from the thinning process. One face has numerous parallel flaking scars, the other has fewer wider and larger flake removals. The butt is gently convex with distinct corners where it meets the straight lateral edges. The butt has been further worked by retouching fro…

A flint handaxe. A bifacially worked pointed handaxe. It has been made on a secondary tabular nodule. Small areas of abraded cortex remain on both faces. The piece is comparatively heavy-butted and the flaking is crude. There is evidence of both hard and soft hammer percussion. The dark grey flint is thickly patinated and stained to a mid to pale yellow-brown. The inter-scar ridges are worn and as a whole the object is moderately abraded. The edges are blunted and heavily chattered and there are indications of incipient thermal cracks. These details indicate a period of fluvial rollin…

A flint handaxe. A narrow, slightly elongate, pointed plano-convex handaxe. It has been made on a large flake that was probably originally naturally fractured. The flint is orangey grey in colour and patinated to a dark orange-brown with patches of iron staining. The flaking scars on the convex face are largely shallow and only occasionally steep, suggesting soft-hammer reduction. The inter-scar ridges are blunted and the piece is generally heavily abraded and the edges blunted and chattered. This, together with the staining, indicates an extended period of fluvial rolling and post-de…

Large Achuleian handaxe. It is a heavy butted, sub-cordate shape with a slight reversed S twist in profile. It is made from greensand chert. It has a heavy, creamy patina and some slight iron staining. There is no cortex visible. It is a well formed piece with shallow, invasive scars on both faces and a finely worked tip. There is (ancient) heavy wear on both faces and the flake ridges have been abraded to 1-2mm in width. The edges have been crushed in antiquity. There is no modern damage.

A flint handaxe of probable Lower Palaeolithic date. The handaxe is a crude and unifacially worked implement made from light grey and orange-brown flint with brown banding. It has a matte patina. One face has several clear flaking scars and a large area of nodule cortex. The other side is largely unworked, with several natural fractures. However, there are some flaking scars around the edges of this side which are more likely to be derived from human action. Identified by Chris Norman as Wymer (1968) type E.
