A complete, small, bifacially worked, flint handaxe of cordate type. The handaxe was found on a beach and consequently is rolled and abraded with a small amount of edge damage. There is invasive soft hammer flaking covering both faces. The butt and mid portion of the axe is thick and it then tapers to a rounded point. The cross section is lentoid. The cutting edges are very straight. The flint has an orangey brown patina which is probably the result of secondary deposition in river gravel outwash. Date: Lower Palaeolithic - c. 500,000 to 150,000 BC Dimensions: 105 mm x 65 mm x 29 …

A flint handaxe. A bifacially worked pointed handaxe. It has been made on a secondary tabular nodule. Small areas of abraded cortex remain on both faces. The piece is comparatively heavy-butted and the flaking is crude. There is evidence of both hard and soft hammer percussion. The dark grey flint is thickly patinated and stained to a mid to pale yellow-brown. The inter-scar ridges are worn and as a whole the object is moderately abraded. The edges are blunted and heavily chattered and there are indications of incipient thermal cracks. These details indicate a period of fluvial rollin…

A flint handaxe. A narrow, slightly elongate, pointed plano-convex handaxe. It has been made on a large flake that was probably originally naturally fractured. The flint is orangey grey in colour and patinated to a dark orange-brown with patches of iron staining. The flaking scars on the convex face are largely shallow and only occasionally steep, suggesting soft-hammer reduction. The inter-scar ridges are blunted and the piece is generally heavily abraded and the edges blunted and chattered. This, together with the staining, indicates an extended period of fluvial rolling and post-de…
