Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete tiny leaf-shaped arrowhead, of Green, H. S. (1980) type 4 A, of slightly lighter patinated dark grey flint, the very tip of the base of this point is broken transversely. The dorsal face is very finely and invasively pressure flaked so some of the flake scars overlap at the centre of this face, the ventral face is hardly worked at all, just a few pressure fakes to form the point, this is probably due to the natural curvature of a struck flake; only flakes need to be removed from the curved parts as an arrowhead must be straight in profile to fly in a straight path, the …

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete small biface, likely to have been a chisel, of unpatinated glossy black and dark grey flint with a small patch of whiteish cortex to the centre of one face, the biface has broken transversely in antiquity (the broken face is glossy, not matt as would be expected for a recent break), the missing end would have presumably been the primary cutting edge, the remaining butt narrows to a point. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Piercer or borer, of glossy unpatinated black and dark grey flint made from tertiary hard hammer struck flake, though a small amount of whiteish cortex remains to one side of the point, directly above this to the lateral edge is a broad, shallow notch c. 10 mm wide, above that is a smaller notch c. 7 mm wide, a third, even smaller one above this is c. 4.5 mm wide, these appear deliberately knapped on decreasing size along this edge, the opposing lateral edge is irregularly damaged/use worn but seems to have no retouch to begin with, and may have served as a obtuse angled scraper or kni…

An complete worked flint flaked axe of Neolithic date (c.4,000-2,350BC)
Description: The object is broadly oval in plan and in cross section. It has been produced from a tertiary flake of pale grey flint; there are dark grey patches on both sides at the distal end. The ventral face has invasive, scaled, abrupt retouch and a possible striking platform at the proximal end although there is possible later damage in this area; the dorsal face has a slightly concave curve and short, scaled, abrupt retouch along both mesal. A flint debitage flake of possible Neolithic date, 4000 - 2200 BC. It is a tertiary D shaped flake of dark brown flint. The flake is incomplete, and the striking platform is missing. There is a long snapped edge forming the longest side. There is some edge damage on the curved sides,a nd other breaks, but the flake does not appears to be intentionally retouched. It is 54.4mm long, 29.7mm wide and 4.7mm thick. 7.7g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Nearly complete, part polished axe, of orange patinated flint, the grey spots to this face are the coarse inclusions within the flint, the other face is a lighter buff colour, probably due to the chalk or other alkali within the deposits it was lain in, the orange is usually due to exposure to iron oxides in glacial sands, this piece must have been deposited on a chalk/sand change in stratification to acquire the differential patination.
The cutting edge is recently damaged on one side, this shows the original colour of the flint to have been mottled light greys. All surfaces are mod…

An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000 BC to 2351 BC. Only the cutting edge of the axehead survives and is D-shaped in plan and ovate in section. The cutting edge is noticably sharp.
The axehead is made of a light and dark brown mottled flint, and there is a hinge fracture to the front of the axehead. There is also a separate flake taken off the reverse side of the axehead, it is inclear if this is a use break or deliberate break. The polished surface has been visibly worn by natural causes likely during later movement of …

The flake is worked from a secondary flake of dark brown grey slightly translucent flint that has a semi glossy patina. The flake is sub-triangular in plan and in section. it has at least four prior removal scars on its dorsal face all parallel and vertical possibly indicating blade production. On the ventral face the striking platform survives as does a shallow sized bulb of percussion including eraillure scar from which sparse but clear conchoidal ripples emanate.

Small flint chisel, of light grey patinated flint, it appears to have been reshaped from a slightly larger completely ground and polished example, a very smooth remnant of the original surface remains to each face, though the rest of the surfaces are knapped to the smaller size, the lateral edges have been reground and the high points of the later flake scars are also smoothed off to some degree. One end is semi-pointed, the other is slightly squared off in plan and may represent the main cutting edge, though this chisel could well have been reversible. A much larger exa…

A complete knapped lithic implement of probable Neolithic date, circa 4000 - 2300 BC. The formed from a secondary flake which is ovate in plan and D-shaped in section. The ventral surface is irregular displaying multiple varying directional removals.
The dorsal surface retains cortext over approximately 80% of the upper surface. Short, stepped, semi-abrupt retouch is present along the curved edge and into each side.
The flint is a dark grey colour. The implement is 60.4mm long, 36.3mm wide, 11.1mm thick and weighs 35.2g.
Scrapers are fairly ubiquitous throughout prehistory and are g…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper dating from the late neolithic period to the early bronze age. The shape is largely circular in plan and in section protrudes to a point on the dorsal face. The body of the scraper is largely a light grey colour, with a gradation to dark grey to the left of the ventral face (and right of the dorsal), distal end up. Very little cortex remains and is mostly found on the mesal. The dorsal face shoes long, scaled, semi-abrupt retouching. The ventral side features long ripple marks across its length which emanate from the bulb of percussion.

Thin, ovoid scraper made from a large primary flake, all flake scars appear to be soft hammer struck to the dorsal face only, the flakes have not been able to remove the thin, weathered cortex, though a very acute angle has been achieved along the longer side, one end is steeper and more of a conventional scraper form, the opposing end and the “back” are of rougher knapping and finishing, this may suggest that this scraper was hafted, though this is not conclusive. Brown patination, single recent chip to the side of the ventral face reveals the flint was originally mottled …
