A complete polished hardstone axehead of Neolithic date. The axehead is 123.6mm in length and 61.3mm wide, with a lenticular side profile and an oval cross section 37mm thick. The butt is rounded and the sides flare slightly towards the blade end before narrowing into the curved cutting edge. One face demonstrates damage from weathering, whilst the other side remains smooth with visible striations from polishing. This suggests that the axehead has spent considerable time partially buried in riverbed sediment with only one face exposed to the moving water.
The axehead is made from…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead dating c. 4000-2200 BC.
The blade section is missing from the axehead which has an uneven diagonal break across the body. The axehead is lenticular in cross-section and side profile, with one almost straight long edge and the opposing one gently convex. Both faces are badly plough damaged with many large surface chips, but the surviving edges are intact with some damage to the butt end. The flint is of a mid-grey colour pale grey patches and the polished surfaces have a light milky covering of re-cortification.

Grey-green volcanic tufa, polished axe fragment. A fragment from the mid-part of a greenstone polished axe, probably Group 6 from the Langdale axe quarries, Cumbria. A lentoid-section fragment with one chipped, rounded and perhaps re-ground and re-used wider end, and with an angled fracture across its narrower end. Dishing on one side, to length 58mm, suggests a previous repair by polishing of a spalled chip from the side of the axe while it was still serving its primary function. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2500 BC

Volcanic tuff polished stone axe fragment, probably Group 6, from the Langdale axe factory, Cumbria. The butt end of a lentoid-section axe-head with chips on both sides, some perhaps arising from use as a battering tool at the broken end. One chip, which remains clear of both ends, appears to have been inflicted and smoothed over before the others, perhaps when the axehead was more complete and undergoing its primary use. Further cracks may also arise from heating and sudden cooling. Abraded. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2500 BC

Neolithic axe. A Greenstone axe presumed to be of Group VI (6), a product of the Langdale Pike axe factory, produced as an oval rough-out and finished by fine polishing which emphasises the natural banding of the stone to striking decorative effect. The axe is pointed oval in cross-section with lateral facets (flattened upper and lower edges). It tapers at both ends, one terminating with a wide, worn and slightly chipped cutting edge, and at the other end to a narrower, more abraded and chipped butt. The surface of the axe is highly polished with a few patches of later damage.

Neolithic polished stone axe
The axe is fragmentary, represented by approximately half with the blade-end present (with a surviving length of 108.3mm and a weight of 310.6g). The break occurred in antiquity but a further flake has been detached from the broken end and blade more recently. The axe has an oval body section, with a flat facet on each side (with a width at the break of 65.2mm, a thickness of 30.6mm and a side facet width of 4mm – 6mm). The surviving lengths of the side are near-straight, slightly convex (reaching a surviving maximum width of 66.4mm, 42mm from the b…

Prehistoric polished flint axe probably of Later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date
The axe is of unusual slender and rectangular-sectioned form and is near-complete with just some damage to the blade edge (with a length of 150mm and a weight of 190.6g). The butt is rectangular (22.8mm wide and 13.1mm thick), below which the sides are straight and near-parallel, slightly divergent (for 35mm, where the axe has a width and thickness of 24.8mm and 19.5mm respectively). The sides are then more divergent but moderately straight to the blade edge. The blade edge (with a width of 52.6mm…

A fragment of Neolithic (4000-2350 BC) flint polished axehead with transverse breaks (losing both cutting edge and butt end) and extensive damage to both faces. The flint is opaque and a light grey in colour with one area of cortex remaining on each face close to (opposite) edges. Iron staining is visible on the arises caused by more recent damage.
From the surviving original long edges, the axehead flares in width over its surviving length (from 50.7mm to 54.9mm) and apparently thickens in proportion (now 20.1mm to 27.3mm) but lack of original surface makes this difficult to estima…

An incomplete Neolithic (4000-2350 BC) reworked flint polished axehead with a transverse break (old) across the body, resulting in a missing butt end.
The axehead flares from the break (31.2mm wide) to the cutting edge (41.8mm wide) over 72.2mm, appearing to curve slightly to one side. In thickness, the axehead measures 18.5mm at the break, expanding to max.19.2mm a little further along the body, before thinning to to the cutting edge (c.2mm thick). It has a lozenge-shaped cross-section.
The axehead has a T-shaped area of polishing on both faces (the widest part being the cutting …

An incomplete polished flint axehead, probably dating to c. 4,000-2,400 BC. The axehead is missing both the butt-end and cutting edge, both lost to irregular, patinated breaks. Both sides of the axehead have been polished to create a regular facet, while both faces are convex, createing a sub-rectangular cross section. The flint has patinated white, with some areas of orange iron staining.
Length 68.7mm; Width 36.1mm; thickness 19.3mm; weight 61.08g.

Grey-green fine-grained Tuf, polished axehead fragment. A thick and battered fragment of a greenstone Group 6 Langdale axehead. One side retains part of the polished surface, which is elsewhere entirely lost to battering or abrasion; perhaps executed with oblique strokes of a hard hammer on the side opposite the relict surface, and perhaps arising from use as a pounder at the projecting parts of the stone. Langdale axes are more common around the Humber than anywhere except their quarry site. The re-use of this fragment from a large example does not appear to have respected its origin…

A complete ground and polished axehead formed of a very fine grained siliceous stone / banded flint of probable Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe is knapped from a flint which has banded colours which range from a bale cream buff through to a deep chocolate brown. There are areas of mid orange staining across the body and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging. The matrix of the stone is smooth although areas of highly polished mid grey white…

A complete ground and polished greenstone axehead of Neolithic date, c. 4000-2100 BC.
The axehead is pointed oval in cross section at the cutting end, becoming more circular in cross section at the butt end. It tapers steadily from the broader cutting edge to the thickened butt end, with the sides becoming increasingly faceted at its thickest central point, before becoming more rounded towards the butt. It measures 31.7mm thick at this thickest central point.
It has suffered some damage, with the original polished surface now largely eroded, leaving behind a roughened surface w…

A fragment of a Neolithic flint polished axehead dating to 4000 BC - 2350 BC. The butt end of a polished axehead, it is sub-triangular and is pointed oval in cross-section. An area of battering at the butt end may indicate that the axehead had also been used as a hammer. One side of the axehead retains its polished surface while the opposing side shows removal of deep, broad flakes, probably to utilise flakes to make other tools when the axe was decommissioned after a transverse break occurred at around the mid-way point of the axe. The flint is opaque, off off-white with a low gloss …

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (4000 BC-2351 BC).
About 60% of the implement survives. The cutting edge is missing due to an old transverse break.
In plan the butt is rounded and the sides flare to the break where it is pointed-oval in cross-section. In side view it is sub-rectangular but pointed at the butt end. Although the axehead has been polished, much of the flaking can be seen. A large flake scar near the break may have been created when it was broken.
This axehead is orange and mid-brown in places with some small off-white areas.

An incomplete polished flint axehead of Neolithic date, c. 4000-2350 BC.
The axehead is sub-square in plan, bi-convex and a pointed oval cross section. It has a smooth polished surface and a tapered curvilinear cutting edge. The axehead terminates at a blunt concave break part-way along its length. The break bears traces of the same orangy-brown discolouration as the outer surfaces, suggesting that the break is old. The tapered cutting-edge has been retouched on both sides as visible through semi-parallel low angled flake scars running from the cutting edge towards the body of the …
