Object type: SADDLE QUERN
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fine-grained Limestone saddle quern. A neat sub-rectangular block of stepped wedge-shaped profile, worn on its upper surface with a flat base which is indented only at its thicker end. The form is Neolithic, and a saddle quern would be used with a separate cobble grinding stone to grind corn to a coarse flour, and hence marks the advent of arable farming in the area whence it was reported. The small size and flat base – the latter perhaps suggesting use on a flat surface or even a table, which would be a remarkable feature to postulate in a Neolithic settlement – are perhap…

Object type: QUERN
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Saddle quern made from a coarse-grained quartz dolerite or diabase erratic, mid-grey with numerous lighter coloured coarse inclusions, the centre appears to have been hollowed by use to depth of c. 50 mm, the depression is sub-circular: c. 130 x 150 mm. The outside of the stone is very roughly and minimally shaped to a sub-bowl shape, one edge is especially straight and is ground almost smooth, presumably to enable the contents to be tipped out once processed. Cf. LIN-ED2837 for a broadly similar quern. Saddle querns were used to grind many plants and seeds both for culi…

A Neolithic to early Bronze Age polished stone perforated object, dating to c. 2800 - 2100 BC. The object is sub-rectangular with slightly convex sides, it is pointed oval in section. Positioned in the centre is a circular perforation which has a slight hourglass form. The butt of the object is slightly rounded towards the butt and shows some wear through use. The opposing edge slopes more sharply into the cutting edge, this is mostly worn through use. The surface on all sides is smooth and only slightly pitted. The stone is dark grey in colour.

A relatively worn blade end of a greenstone adzehead, of probable late Neolithic - early Bronze Age date, made from weathered greenstone meta-gabbro.
Greenstones axe or adze heads were commonplace during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods in Cornwall.
'Greenstone' is actually a general archaeological term, rather than meaning a specific stone. It is commonly used to refer to any green-hued minerals that were used during the Prehistoric, to make tools, jewellery etc... To make matters even more complicated, various antiquarian literature in Cornwall calls this…

A relatively worn, pitted adze head, of probable late Neolithic - early Bronze Age date, made from amphibolite schist. It is a light blue-green colour, and flares at its cutting edge.
Interesting, this object shows signs of having been broken, and the blade subsequently re-worked. It appears to have originally been an adze, but its secondary use was as an axehead.
Greenstones axe or adze heads were commonplace during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods in Cornwall. Due to depositional context of this find, and due to the relative proximity upstream of a Bronze Age-Iron Age…

Granite pebble hammerstone. A large rounded water-worn cobble of a pale hard igneous rock, probably granite from Glacial Drift. Both ends are brightened and scarred by use as a pounding or hammering tool. A complete Neolithic finely worked polished stone axehead. It is an elongated sub-triangular shape and oval in cross-section, with straight slightly outwards curving sides, a narrow, rounded butt and a blade end that curves outwards only very slightly. It is composed of a coarse-grained basic intrusive rock that has probably undergone metamorphism, speckled white and blue-grey in colour. There is a patch of orange-brown straining on one face. It survives in good condition with only a small amount of damage to the butt end.
