A complete Late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic flint implement, probably a pick (c. 6500 BC-c. 3500 BC). This implement, made on an elongated pebble, is sub-triangular in plan and sub-circular in cross-section. About 60% of the cortex is retained and has multi-directional flake removals. The cortex at the front (first image) is pitted and battered indicating that it was also used as a hammerstone. The butt is slightly oblique and has several small removals. The point has cortex on one side and has been flaked on the opposite side. The back has a large natural fracture and is mainl…

County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete Neolithic flint leaf arrowhead (4000 BC-2350 BC). A incomplete broad leaf-shaped arrowhead formed from a thin flake. The tip is lost but what remains suggests that the object was of elongated ogival form when complete. Both sides are invasively worked and retouch around the edges of both sides are short, low angled and parallel. This arrowhead is grey and semi-translucent. It is unclear whether the tip of the arrowhead was lost in antiquity or recently. Length: 33.3mm; width: 19.2mm; thickness: 3.2mm. Weight: 2.09g.

The ventral face has a bulb of percussion with a percussion scar. About 75% of the dorsal face has an off-white/greyish cortex. The ventral face is brown with creamy mott…

An incomplete Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint thumbnail scraper (2500 BC-1500 BC) This scraper, made on a flake, is sub-oval in plan, convex on the dorsal face and broadly flat on the ventral face. It has a deliberately fashioned protrusion to one side which may relate to hafting. The dorsal face has been retouched around the edges and over most of the centre. The ventral surface has no bulb of percussion and vague ripples determine the proximal and distal ends. On the ventral face, close to the edge of the protrusion, there are tiny areas of gloss. There is a modern chip…

A complete Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint side-end scraper (2500 BC-1500 BC). The scraper has a negative bulb of percussion and ripples on the dorsal face and is covered with about 40% cortex. At the distal end has been worked and the removals are semi-abrupt, short and parallel. There is a notch along the side with the cortex which may be a deliberate feature. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion with a percussion scar and no ripples. The flint is grey and mottled creamy grey with a reddish tinge. The cortex is orangey buff. Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint pick of probable Early Neolithic date (3500 BC-2900 BC). The pick is sub-rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoidal in cross-section. It has probably been made from an elongated flint pebble. This implement is humped-backed. The dorsal face is mainly covered with cortex and has been knapped to form a cutting edge at the distal end. One side of the dorsal face has been crudely knapped along its entire length. The opposite side is in the form a large natural break and the ventral face is featureless except for a small negative bulb of percussion. At the butt end there…
