A complete flint implement, probably of Neolithic to Bronze Age date (3500 BC-800 BC). This implement has been manufactured from a large flake which is sub-triangular in plan. The proximal end is roughly rectangular in plan. It then flares to the distal end where there is a large notch. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion and a percussion scar at the proximal end. Its surface undulates and has rippling. The dorsal surface is flaked and uneven and has an area of brown purplish cortex. The area adjacent to the notch on the dorsal face is in the form of columnar fracturing. All the…

A complete Neolithic polished flint axehead (3500 BC-2100 BC). This axehead is flattish and slender and the surface colour is mottled and ranges from mid-grey to black. It is sub-rectangular in plan being slightly narrower at the butt end. Close to the butt end the width is about 42.0mm and at the cutting edge it has a width of 46.5mm. The cutting edge is curved evenly. In side view, it is slightly curved throughout its length and is an elongated pointed oval shape. It has traces of polishing on both faces but not along the sides. This polishing is on some of the high spots, but not …

A complete Early Neolithic flint impement of laurel leaf form, probably a scraper (3500 BC-2900 BC). The tool is sub-oval in plan. The ventral surface is largely flat and has a bulb of percussion and a percussion scar at the proximal end with indistinct radiating ripples. The dorsal surface is convex and has a negative bulb of percussion at the proximal end. It has been finely worked around the edges and the invasive removals are long, semi-abrupt and mainly parallel. However, at the distal end the removals are abrupt and irregular or scaled. At the centre of the dorsal surface ther…

A complete flint scraper of Neolithic to Bronze Age date 3500 BC - 800 BC). This implement, made on a secondary flake, is mottled grey and off-white and is sub-triangular in plan. The dorsal surface has three negative scars and two prominent arrises. On the right side of the dorsal surface there is a patch of sub-oval iron staining. An incomplete Neolithic leaf-shaped flint arrowhead (3500 BC-2500 BC). This arrowhead is invasively worked on both faces and the tip and the base are missing due to breaks. It is unclear whether the breaks are old or new. The arrowhead is semi-translucent and mainly grey in color with some creamy mottling. This arrowhead is in perfect condition apart from the breaks. 36.3 x 18.6 x 4.8mm. Weight: 3.40g. The implement does not exactly conform to the Green or Clark typology in Butler 2005 but seems to be quite close to Clark's Type 1 (Butler 2005: 124, ref: 1). Butler 2005: 12…

A fragment of gold sheet, the remains of a personal ornament of Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 BC-c. 2200 BC). The object is a type known as a basket-shaped ornament. Treasure case no. 2009 T741. The plaque would have originally been U-shaped in cross-section with a tang soldered mid-way along its longitudinal length for attachment. In plan, it has a curving outline and when complete, would have formed an elongated oval shape. Following the outline are two parallel lines of finely punched dots. There are also similar dots punched from the opposite side. These, how…

An incomplete axehead rough-out of later Neolithic date (c. 2500-2100 BC). The rough-out is knapped from a greenish/grey buff volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with infrequent crystalline inclusions. Tuff is found in Britain and Ireland in a band that runs down the Irish Sea from the Lake District (the Langdale’s source Group VI), County Antrim (Ireland), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint in that it can b…

An almost complete flint arrowhead of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date (2500-1500 BC). The tang is partly missing due to an old break. The arrowhead is symmetrical in plan and has probably been made on a tertiary flake. Each face is slightly convex and in plan, the sides are also convex. It is sub-triangular in plan and in side view it is pointed at the top and rounded at the bottom. It has a chip at each corner of the cutting edge on both faces. These appear to be recent breaks. Old breaks are situated on each face of the butt. These breaks have overlying striations have may have been created by an attempt to smooth the breaks. Alternatively, the striations may represent a secondary use of the implement. The iden…
