Neolithic patinated dark grey flint axe head. The axe is thin-butted, double convex, has rounded ends, and expands in plan from the butt to the blade end. Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Early Neolithic to early Bronze Age partially patinated brown flint blade. It has a series of four small shallow notches down one side, and two less obvious ones on the other side. It has been very finely knapped (the thickness never exceeds 2.5mm even at the butt end), appears unbroken, and yet has retouches and wear polish. This suggests a long lived tool that was probably used for fairly light activities, possibly the removal of bark. Dates to between c4000 and c1600 BC. The length is 47mm, and the width is 15mm the thickness 2.5mm and the weight is 2.14g.

Nearly opaque, pale grey grading to white, worked quartz or quartzite. It has probably been made by working a pebble removed or eroded out of the native millstone grit. The shape of the tool has been formed with 5 major flakes and a number of smaller ones. Two of the edges have been retouched by microflaking. The edges remains sharp. It was possibly mounted at the end of a stick, bone or similar. The photograph has been taken so that the two retouched edges are pointing up. The unusual choice of knapping material, given the local abundance of good quality chert, may have accorded this…

Part of a mid Neolithic to early Bronze Age brown/green flint tool dating to between c2900 and c1500 BC. The flint has a high degree of translucence and is a brown/green colour with many small circular white inclusions. It seems originally to have been part of a D shaped scraper that was roughly 40mm in diameter. Only one quarter of the scraper remains. It has been broken in antiquity and refashioned to work as a multi tool. It has definately been used as a graver or borer, and probably also as burin or two and an end scraper. The length is 27mm, width 20mm and the thickness 7mm, an…

A Neolithic or Bronze Age sub circular white flint 'pot lid' with spots of iron staining. Modified to perform as a scraper by flaking along the entire curved edge. The straight edge has been created by one large removal, possibly natural. Probably Neolithic or Bronze Age (c3500 to c800 BC) but impossible to date accurately. Modified natural 'pot lids' would have made an expedient 'quick fix' tool in an emergency. The presence of four in the same vicinity suggests a butchery site or camp. They were possibly used only while the site was occupied then discarded. See also LANCUM-03C6C2,…
