Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint end scraper. It is formed on a broad secondary flake with thick cortex still covering the dorsal face. There is a small amount of very fine, abrupt, scaled retouch along the edge of the distal end and a shallow notch to the right side of this. It has a narrow butt and fairly prominant bulb of percussion. The flint is mid brown-gray in colour with a slight milky patina. Length: 40.26mm, width: 34.57mm, thickness: 13.52mm, weight: 17.32g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint awl/scraper/notched flake. It is formed on a long, narrow secondary flake, which still has cortex covering the left side of the dorsal face. A short, blunt point has been created below the left side of the distal end via a small amount of scaled, short, low-angle retouch, a deep notch and a few long, thin removals on its dorsal surface. There is also a small amount of long, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch along the right side of the dorsal face and a probably deliberate deep notch in its centre. The tool may therefore have had a variety…

A fragment of flintworking debitage. A tertiary flake with a broad butt and a prominant bulb of percussion. No obvious retouch. Mid-grey flint with a slightly milky patina. Found in the same location as two Neolithic to early Bronze Age scrapers so likely to be of a similar date. Length: 26.63mm, width: 23.87mm, thickness: 7.37mm, weight: 4.67g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two fragments of flintworking debitage of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Both are secondary flakes. One has invasive scaled retouch in places on both faces and several abrupt breaks at the proximal end, suggesting that it may have splinted off a larger worked object. There is potentially a small amount of informal retouch along the right side of the dorsal face, but this is more likely to be rolling from plough soil. This fragment has a shiny patina whereas the other is more matt. Combined weight: 40.42g

Two fragments of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age debitage. One is a long, pointed, secondary flake with cortex still covering the left side of the dorsal face. The other is a small, semi-circular, secondary flake with some cortex on the dorsal face. Neither shows any clear evidence of retouch, but both have significantly rolled edges, scratched surfaces and crazing in places from being in plough soil. Both are grey-brown in colour with some milky patination (heavier on the smaller). Combined weight: 27.86g

A fragment of Neolithic to early Bronze Age flintworking debris. It is a secondary flake with some cortex still remaining on the dorsal face. There are parallel flaking scars on the dorsal face and the edges of flaking scars running in the opposite directions around the edges suggesting that it may be a core rejuvenation flake. The butt is narrow and the bulb of percussion prominant. The flint is light grey in colour with some opaque patches and a slight milky patina. An incomplete Neolithic polished flint handaxe. It is long and roughly oval in shape, but expanding slightly towards the blade end, and plano-convex in cross section with a slightly higher central ridge on one face. There is a small amount of invasive, scaled, low angle retouch along the sides and a chunk is missing from one side of the blade end. This break is heavily patinated suggesting that it occurred prior to deposition and possibly as a result of use. The flint, where it is exposed at the butt end, is light grey in colour, but the rest of the surface is very heavily patinated a…

A complete Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint side scraper. It is formed on a secondary flake with cortex remaining on half of the dorsal face. There is fine, nibbled retouch along the full length of the right side of the dorsal face. There is also a notch in the centre of the left side, but this may not be the product of deliberate working. It has a broad butt and small, prominant bulb of percussion. The flint is milky mid-grey in colour with a shiny patina. Length: 42.83mm, width: 28.06mm, thickness: 12.21mm, weight: 12.73g
