Complete flint thumbnail scraper made from a secondary flake. The object survives in good condition with only a small amount of plough damage to all edges. Cortex covers the flat proximal end. The dorsal face has four flaking scars and the left, right and distal edges show semi-abrupt retouch. The removals are long and sub-parallel. The ventral face is smooth but uneven with no obvious bulb of percussion. The flint is mid-grey in colour and of poor quality. However, the ventral face has a slightly milky patina suggesting that the object may be an example of later reworking following e…

Small flint thumb nail scraper made from a secondary flake, probably dating from the Neolithic to early Bronze Age. The scraper has a small butt, with diffuse bulb and very discreet ripples, suggesting that a small, soft hammer was used. The ventral face is concave. The dorsal face has high-gloss, whitish pebble cortex remaining on the left-hand side. In the centre are two long, curved flaking scars. To the right of these is low angle, short, stepped retouch. Below the retouched edge, on the ventral face, a small notch has been removed. There is also a small amount of retouch in the ce…

Thumb nail scraper, made from a secondary flake, of probable Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. The butt appears to have snapped off following deposition leaving a sharp break. However, very discreet ripples suggest that a soft hammer was probably used. The dorsal face has brown, matt, pebble cortex remaining on the right-hand side. In the centre and to the left of the dorsal face are two long, thin flaking scars. Above this, at the distal end, is semi-abrupt, long, scaled retouch. A small flint implement, created on a secondary flake. Probably a scraper and notched-flake, but possibly an unusually shaped arrowhead. Sub-triangular in shape, the object does look rather like a crude or damaged Neolithic arrow-head. However, it is complete, apart from a missing tip to the distal end and would probably be too mishapen to function as an arrow head. Neither does it fit in well to the standard typology of arrowheads from this period. A small amount of cortex remains to the right of the distal end of the dorsal face. Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint end scraper, using a secondary flake. The tool is sub-rectangular in shape and fairly thin. It has two inward curving ridges running down the centre of the dorsal face. The butt is quite wide and thin and covered in a small layer of whitish pebble cortex. A small chip has removed the bulb of percussion on the ventral face. Possibly a small amount of retouch can be seen on both sides, which have created slight inward curves. A small amount of abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch can also be seen on the fairly straight edge of the distal end. The flint is mid grey-brown i…

Side and end scraper, produced on a secondary flake. When viewed from the dorsal face, the object has a fairly straight left side with an outwards curving proximal end and right side. On the ventral face the platform is small and the bulb fairly prominent. The dorsal face has a ridge running its length towards the left side. To the left of this ridge, towards the distal end, is a small amount of semi-abrupt, invasive, stepped retouch, with some shorter, subparallel retouch at the very edge. There is further semi-abrupt, long, scaled retouch along the curved distal end reaching along th…

Flint scraper, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Tertiary flake. The object is roughly semi-circular in shape. It has a finely worked dorsal face, covered with thin, parallel flaking scars. There are long, scaled, low angle to semi-abrupt removals along the left edge of the dorsal face. At the distal end a small chunk of flint it missing. To the right side of this and along the right edge are long, sub-parallel, low angle to semi-abrupt removals. The flint is grey in colour with speckled, milky, shiny patination. The butt is wide and there is a very prominent bulb on the …

Flint scraper, probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Tertiary flake. The object is sub-circular in shape. There are a few parallel flaking scars on the dorsal face. On the left side of the dorsal face part of a very small clear quartz crystal geode can be seen embedded into the flint. This has been split open during the knapping process leaving only a small portion of the complete geode in place. Within this several tiny crystals can be seen. A degree on wear around this, particularly on the ventral face, suggests that this may have been deliberately used as a further feature…

Flint scraper on a tertiary flake of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The object is long and thin in shape and sub-triangular in cross-section. It has a slightly curved central ridge on the dorsal face. Along the left side of the dorsal face is semi-abrupt, long, subparallel retouch, becoming finer and shorter at the very edge. The distal end curves inwards slightly and a small amount of semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch can be seen along the edge of the dorsal face here too. The butt is small and has been deliberately rounded and the bulb is fairly diffuse. There are seve…

Flint scraper on a secondary flake of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Very small in size, perhaps suggesting that flint was a valuable resource for whoever created it. Chalky brown cortex covers a portion of the dorsal face to the left side. semi-abrupt, long to invasive, subparallel retouch can be seen at the proximal end of the dorsal face, creating a slightly pointed edge and removing the butt. The bulb is fairly prominent on the ventral face. The flint is dark grey in colour with lighter patches in places and a fiarly shiny patina. Length: 16.67mm, Width: 13.46mm, …

Flint scraper on a secondary flake of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The object is very small in size, suggesting that flint was a valuable resource for whoever created it. There are several small, thin removals on the dorsal face. Abrupt, very short, scaled retouch can be seen along the left edge of the dorsal face. A small section of chalky brown cortex remains at the proximal end of the dosral face. The flint is mid grey-brown in colour, speckled with lighter patches and has a shiny patina. Flint side scraper of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Tertiary flint flake. The object is roughly leaf shaped with a pointed distal end. The butt is fairly narrow and there is a pronounced bulb and clear ripples on the ventral face suggesting that a small, hard hammer was used. There is retouch along the left side and around the distal end of the dorsal face. This is long, parallel and low angle towards the proximal end, becoming semi-abrupt towards the distal end. The flint is light grey in colour, mottled with small whitish patches. It remains in fairly good condition wi…
