Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint end scraper, using a secondary flake. The tool is sub-rectangular in shape and fairly thin. It has two inward curving ridges running down the centre of the dorsal face. The butt is quite wide and thin and covered in a small layer of whitish pebble cortex. A small chip has removed the bulb of percussion on the ventral face. Possibly a small amount of retouch can be seen on both sides, which have created slight inward curves. A small amount of abrupt, long, sub-parallel retouch can also be seen on the fairly straight edge of the distal end. The flint is mid grey-brown i…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small complete flint multi-platform core. The flint is dark brown-grey in colour, with occasional lighter speckles in places and a glossy patina. Pebble cortex remains covering a few of the surfaces. Only a few large flaking scars can be seen, suggesting that the core was not extensively worked. It is probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age in date, 3500-1500 BC. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint arrowhead of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Only the tip survives. This has a rounded end and is oval in cross-section with fairly sharp edges. Both faces are covered with fine, invasive, scaled retouch. The flint is light brown in colour and slightly translucent. All faces, including the break are covered with a patchy, milky patina. Unfortunately, because the butt of the arrowhead is missing, its original form is difficult to discern and therefore it is hard to date it more closely than this. Flint scraper, created from a secondary flake, probably dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. The ventral face is convex in shape with a prominent bulb of percussion and a fairly small striking platform. The dorsal face is also convex, with a large flaking scar on the left side and several smaller ones on the right. A small amount of cortex also remains in place around the middle of the right side. A small amount of long, scaled, semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch may be seen at the distal end of the dorsal face, extending down the right side sligtly. The flint is brownish in colour …

Large flint thumbnail scraper, created from a secondary flake, probably dating to the Neolithic or Early Bronze Age. The ventral face is convex in shape with a small bulb of percussion and a fairly large striking platform. The dorsal face is highly convex and is covered with with three large, main removals. A small amount of cortex also remains in place at the proximal end. A small amount of short, scaled, semi-abrupt to abrupt retouch may be seen around the curved distal end of the dorsal face. Large side scraper, created from a secondary flake, probably dating to the Neolithic. The scraper is sub-ovoid in shape and very evenly shaped and carefully worked. The ventral face is slightly convex in shape with a prominent bulb of percussion. The striking platform has been removed to form a rounded end. The dorsal face is convex, becoming thicker towards the distal ned, which still has a small amount of cortex remaining on it. The dorsal face has two long flaking scars either side of a central ridge, which itself divides in two towards the distal end where a further, sub-triangular…

Small fragment of flint knapping debitage, probably dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Tertiary flake. A few flaking scars on the dorsal face, plus diffuse bulb and ripple lines in the ventral suggest that this is the remains of flint working rather than a naturally occuring phenomenon such as a 'pot lid' fracture. Large flint scraper of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The object is roughly semi-circular in form. It has a wide butt and prominent bulb, suggesting that a large, hard hammer was used in its production. The flint is very poor quality and mostly inner cortex. The dorsal face has three primary flaking scars on its surface and several laminar fractures around the proximal end. The distal end still has rough outer cortex remaining towards the left side. The right side has a number of low angle, short, parallel removals. Length: 61.53mm, Width: 47.90mm, Thickness: 17.43 Weight:

A flint awl or piercer of probable Neolithic date. The proximal end is unworked and retains the outer, rounded pebble cortex. Above this on the dorsal face are three long, thin, parallel flaking scars. The distal end has then been worked to a point by retouching both edges from around the mid-point onwards. The object therefore has a rounded butt with a long, thin piercer extending from this, curving downwards slightly and tapering a little towards the end. The tip is blunt and this probably the result of damage following deposition. The flint is dark grey-brown in colour, growing ligh…

A small flint implement, created on a secondary flake. Probably a scraper and notched-flake, but possibly an unusually shaped arrowhead. Sub-triangular in shape, the object does look rather like a crude or damaged Neolithic arrow-head. However, it is complete, apart from a missing tip to the distal end and would probably be too mishapen to function as an arrow head. Neither does it fit in well to the standard typology of arrowheads from this period. A small amount of cortex remains to the right of the distal end of the dorsal face. Semi-abrupt to low angle, invasive, scaled retouch can…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint piercer or borer. The borer has been created on a long-thin, tertiary flake. The dorsal face is convex and covered with four long flaking scars. At the proximal end a small spur has been created by removing a concave section to the left. The flint has a milky patina, but this is missing where removals have created the spur, suggesting that an earlier flake may have been reused. The implement is probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, though the flake may be earlier.

Probable flint side scraper. The object has a large, wide butt covered with chalky cortex. Both faces of convex. The dorsal face is quite rough, uneven and covered with small flaking scars, suggesting that it may be a rejuvenation flake from a core. The ventral face, however, is covered with fine, small removals and invasive, sub-parallel, low angle retouch along the left edge, suggesting that the flake has then been made into a scraper. It is probably of Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Length: 35.96mm, Width: 31.12mm, Thickness: 19.99mm, Weight: 22.3g

Flint scraper, produced on a long, tertiary flake. The dorsal face has four long, thin flaking scars. The ventral face has a prominent bulb, but the striking platform is missing due to retouch.
