Object type: ADZE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint late Mesolithic to early Neolithic probable adze. It is largely straight-sided (although both sides curved outwards very slightly), tapering slightly towards one end, with rounded ends and an irregular flattened lozenge-shaped cross-section. There is invasive, scaled flaking on both faces and a possible attempt at a tranchet flake removal from one face of the cutting edge. There is some damage around the butt end and a small section missing here. There is also a notch caused by damage to the blade ned. The flint is a mid-grey in colour with slight patination on one…

An incomplete flint late Mesolithic to early Neolithic probable adze. It is straight-sided, tapering slightly towards one end, with rounded ends and an irregular plano-convex cross-section. There is invasive, scaled flaking on both faces and a possible attempt at a tranchet flake removal from one face of the cutting edge. There is some damage around the butt end and possibly a small section missing here. The flint is a mid-grey in colour with slight patination and some orange staining in places. The presence of a potential tranchet flake suggests that this example may be of late Me…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic flint leaf-shaped arrowhead. It is roughly oval in form, but with a straight break across the distal end. It is not clear whether this was deliberate or not. The dorsal face is covered with long, invasive, parallel scaled retouch. There is a small amount of short scaled retouch around the outside of the ventral face only. The flint is brown-grey in colour with lighter milky patches in places. This form of arrowhead is typical of the earlier Neolithic. Length: 33.86mm, width: 16.86mm, thickness: 4.15mm, weight: 2.77g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint early Neolithic leaf-shaped arrowhead. It is formed from a secondary flake with a very small amount of cortex attached to one face at the distal end. It is large in size, roughly ovoid in shape and pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces are covered with scaled retouch and there is addition irregular, short, low angle retouch in places around the edges. The flint is light, translucent brown in colour with some orange staining in places. The proximal end has a small flake removed on one face creating a concave section, which may be intended to aid attachment. Leng…

A complete flint early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead. It is triangular in shape with projecting rounded barbs, the tip of one missing. The central tang is sub-rectangular in shape. Both faces have invasive/covering, scaled, low-angle retouch, with an unretouched patch in the centre of one face. The flint is a mid-grey colour with limited patination. Barbed and tanged arrowheads are characteristic of the Neolithic/early Bronze Age transition to middle Bronze Age period, c.2400-1000 BC. A complete Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint awl/scraper/notched flake. It is formed on a long, narrow secondary flake, which still has cortex covering the left side of the dorsal face. A short, blunt point has been created below the left side of the distal end via a small amount of scaled, short, low-angle retouch, a deep notch and a few long, thin removals on its dorsal surface. There is also a small amount of long, semi-abrupt, sub-parallel retouch along the right side of the dorsal face and a probably deliberate deep notch in its centre. The tool may therefore have had a variety…

A flint awl or borer of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. A triangular secondary flake with thick orange cortex covering the proximal end. Both faces are covered with a milky patina, which has been deliberately removed in a few places on the dorsal face suggesting that an older object was reused at a later date. There is long, scaled, low angle retouch along the right side of the ventral face and short, abrupt, irregular retouch around the distal end of the dorsal face, which together create a rounded point at the distal end. The bulb has been removed. The flint is mid grey…

An incomplete Neolithic flaked an polished flint axe. It is roughly triangular in shape, with largely straight sides and a slightly outwards curving blade end. Both faces are covered with scaled, covering retouch and have been partially polished on the ridges between the flaking scars. The blade end has also been polished to create a sharp cutting edge. There is an abrupt break across the butt end and its tip is missing. The flint is an opaque light grey in colour with some surface patination. A fragment of a larger flint tool, possibly an axe or adze of Mesolithic to early Bronze Age date. It is formed on a secondary flake - rough pebble cortex still remains on the dorsal face. It is roughly triangular in shape, but was clearly much larger originally as there is an abrupt, rough break at the proximal end. Several large, crude flakes have been removed from the ventral face and there is invasive, sub-parallel retouch covering most of the dorsal face. The left side of the dorsal face is much steeper than the right side. Both faces and the break are heavily patinated. Damage a…

A reworked Neolithic polished stone reworked axehead. It is roughly oval in shape and plano-convex in cross section. Several areas on both faces feature the original polished surface and this is particularly apparent at the butt end of one face. The outer end appears to have broken away, however, and the remaining portion of the axe has been retouched with large, scaled, invasive flakes to allow it to be reused. The stone is light grey in colour, perhaps some kind of flint, with some patination and patches of high gloss in places. The original polished axe would have been of Neolit…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint handaxe. It is long and roughly oval in shape, but expanding slightly towards the blade end, and plano-convex in cross section with a slightly higher central ridge on one face. There is a small amount of invasive, scaled, low angle retouch along the sides and a chunk is missing from one side of the blade end. This break is heavily patinated suggesting that it occurred prior to deposition and possibly as a result of use. The flint, where it is exposed at the butt end, is light grey in colour, but the rest of the surface is very heavily patinated a…
