Object type: LAUREL LEAF
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint 'laurel leaf' knife of early Neolithic date. It is ovoid in shape with a flattened, pointed-oval cross-section, but is slightly asymmetrical in shape. The flint is a mottled mid- to light grey-brown with limited surface patination and some very limited orange staining in places. Covering, low angle retouch on both faces, which appears to have been struck with a soft hammer, removing all traces of the original blank flake.  'Laurel leaves' appear to have been used as knives, perhaps with the addition of a wooden handle, as their asymmetrical f…

Object type: AXEHEAD

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic polished (and reworked) flint axehead. It is roughly triangular in shape and plano-convex in cross section. It expands slightly towards the blade end, which curves outwards and there is an abrupt break across the narrow butt end. Around 60% of each face features the original polished surface, but there is scaled, invasive, low-angle retouch along each side and a few smaller removals across the blade end, suggesting that the axe was modified at some point to allow further use - perhaps after it was damaged. The flint is light grey in colour, but the surface is heavily patin…

An incomplete Neolithic polished flint handaxe. It is long and roughly oval in shape, but expanding slightly towards the blade end, and plano-convex in cross section with a slightly higher central ridge on one face. There is a small amount of invasive, scaled, low angle retouch along the sides and a chunk is missing from one side of the blade end. This break is heavily patinated suggesting that it occurred prior to deposition and possibly as a result of use. The flint, where it is exposed at the butt end, is light grey in colour, but the rest of the surface is very heavily patinated a…

A fragment of Neolithic to early Bronze Age flintworking debris. It is a secondary flake with some cortex still remaining on the dorsal face. There are parallel flaking scars on the dorsal face and the edges of flaking scars running in the opposite directions around the edges suggesting that it may be a core rejuvenation flake. The butt is narrow and the bulb of percussion prominant. The flint is light grey in colour with some opaque patches and a slight milky patina.
