Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
A complete flint? polished axehead dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000-2500 BC). The axe is in very good condition and is of high quality. The stone is a mottled light grey and mid brown colour. The axe has side facets and a thin butt. It has been polished all over and the cutting edge has been resharpened and re-polished in antiquity after being damaged. An area of damage on one side was caused by the finder hitting it with a pickaxe when it was discovered some c. 60 years ago. This is a very nice example of a Neolithic polished axe.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A collection of six later prehistoric flakes, probably dating from c. 7000 - 1400 BC (Mesolithic to Middle Bronze Age). The flakes have all been made on a mottled grey flint with some showing calcification of the stone. Most of the flints have under 5% cortex remaining. None are retouched. These flakes form part of an assemblage of flint artefacts of later prehistoric date.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two possible core rejuvenation flakes of later prehistoric date, probably dating from c. 4000 - 1400 BC (Neolithic / Bronze Age). The flakes have suffered much modern damage (possibly from agricultural activity or gravel extraction). The larger flake is made from a orangey-brown flint (suggesting a valley source?) while the other is a mottled, mostly white flint (probably grey internally, some recalcification may have taken place), possibly from an upland source. Both flakes retain their platforms and the bulb of percussion. There si no retouch. These flakes forms part of an a…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A later prehistoric flake, probably dating from c. 4000 - 2200 BC (Neolithic period). The form of the flake is similar to later Neolithic fabricators however the retouch is quite fresh and cuts through the surface patina on both dorsal and ventral surfaces (Alison Roberts Ashmolean Museum, pers. comm). This suggests a more modern date for the retouch. The flake has been made on a mottled mid grey flint with approximately 25% cortext remaining on the dorsal surface. This flake forms part of an assemblage of flint artefacts of later prehistoric date.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint expedient transverse arrowhead dating to the Late Neolithic period, c. 2700-2350 BC. The flint is roughly worked with minimal removals and basically no retouch along the lateral edges, however there is retouch at the tip of the point. The arrowhead has suffered from post-depositional damage, probably as a result of modern agricultural activity.

A piece of flint debitage in the form of a blade of probable later Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 8000 - 3000 BC). The flake retains the bulb of percussion. The flake has suffered modern damage to its dorsal surface and edges; there may be some limited retouching along part of one lateral edge on the ventral side, however it is partly obscured by modern edge damage. The flint is a mottled grey to grey-brown in colour. Uncertain prehistoric date.

Two unretouched flint blades (production debitage) of later prehistoric date, probably Mesolithic or Neolithic (c. 8000-3000 BC). Both blades retain their bulbs of percussion, platform and show radiating fracture lines. Several previous removals, suggestive of bladelet / microlith production (Mesolithic), are visible as flake scars. One piece of debitage retains 33% cortex, the other is a tertiary piece.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the early Neolithic period. The arrowhead is formed from a piece of mottled blue/ grey flint which has a heavily calcified outer surface, suggesting a chalk downland source. The arrowhead has been extensively retouched on both ventral and dorsal face, with some post-depositional damage evident. At the proximal end of the arrowhead there is the impression of notching on either edge, which may indicate the beginnings of the creation of a tang, however the surfaces in this area are not consistent with the rest of the arrowhead and these notches are…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A transverse or oblique arrowhead dating to the later Neolithic period (c. 4000-2350 BC). Made from a light grey and white flint (tertiary flake), covering scalar retouch leaves distinction between dorsal and ventral faces uncertain. There is also post-depositional damage on both surfaces and all edges. The colour of the flint and the white patina suggests a chalk downland source for the raw material. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete but slightly damaged struck flint end and side scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is broadly D-shaped in pland and section and is formed on a tertiary flake of mottled light and dark grey flint; flake scars on the dorsal surface show previous removals. The platform has suffered post-depositional (weathering) damage and most of the bulb scar has been removed / is missing, however the percussion lines are retained on the ventral side. The dorsal surface bares soft-hammer retouch along c.60% of the left lateral, irregularly around t…

A flint nose scraper on a plunging blade from a double platformed core, therefore of Mesolithic or Neolithic date (c. 8000-2400 BC). The object is formed on a tertiary flake of a mottled grey flint. There are three, if not more, two-directional removals visible on the dorsal surface; although neither platform survives, this is indicitive of a double platformed core. The thinner distal end has some fine soft hammer retouch on its tip which has lead to its identification as a nose scraper, however this may also have been the result of removal or preperation of the platform. This is prob…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete stone axe of Neolithic date, probably a Group VI Langdale axe. The stone axe has been polished and is grey-green in colour. The axe is made from a fine-grained siliceous tuff, a sedimentary volcanic rock which was orignally deposited in water and is likely to be from the Great Langdale quarries in Cumbria. The axe is damaged, missing most of one side and some of the blade edge on both surfaces. The break may have occured during use, as it appears to originate from the blade end (Alison Roberts pers. comm). c. 4000-2351 BC.

A secondary flint flake, debris from flint working (debitage). The flake is broadly triangular in plan and retains the platform and bulb of percussion. Previous removals are evident on its dorsal surface. A small area of cortex (c.5%) is retained on the distal end. The flint is mottled grey in colour. Due to being generally undiagnostic dating can only be prehistoric, generally Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age in date although more likely to be of later Mesolithic to Neolithic in date (c. 6000-2300 BC).
