Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published
A complete flint polished axehead of Neolithic date. It is struck from a mottled pale grey to white flint, is roughly triangular in form and pointed oval in section with flattened/faceted edges. The rounded butt end is complete and has limited short, long angled and scaled retouch on both faces. Both sides of the axe have flattened, rectangular faces that are smoothly polished and narrow towards each end of the axe. Each of the faces are smoothly polished with few flake scars visible, although with some orange/brown staining probably resultant from plough damage. At the blade end the …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete and re-worked polished Neolithic axehead. It is roughly oval in form and pointed-oval in cross section, and struck from a mottled pale grey flint. One edge and part of one face have the remains of extensive polishing, however the surrounding areas of both faces have extensive flake removal. The axe is very sort and both ends of the object have short, semi-abrupt and scaled retouch. Thissuggeststhat it may have been damaged or broken in antiquity and then subsequently re-worked for different usage, the original polished axe being much larger. It measures 73.29mm in length…

The object has a crescentic blade end with chips at one end and close to the centre, as well as multiple striations on the cutting edges that indicate probable use-wear and possible re-sharpening. Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
An unpatinated flint leaf-shaped arrowhead of Neolithic date. It is struck on a pale brown flint flake that has partial patination on areas that lack flake removal or edge retouch, suggesting possible re-use of an earlier flake to create the arrowhead. Both faces have limited flake removal and neat, scaled, low angled retouch. The entire object measures 30.21mm in length, 15.12mm in width, 4.79mm in thickness and 2.01g in weight. This is a leaf-shaped arrowhead struck on a small flint flake. It is of probable Neolithic date, c.4000-2550 BC.

A small flint object, possibly a small leaf-shaped arrowhead struck on a blade. It has a mottled brown flint, with parallel blade scars on the dorsal face and limited edge retouch. The entire object measures 28.90mm in length, 14.30mm in width, 3.94mm in thickness and 1.78g in weight. This is a possible leaf-shaped arrowhead struck on a small blade. If this is indeed the case then it is likely to be of Neolithic date (c.4000-2550 BC), however is it is simply a retouched blade then an earlier Mesolithic date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A patinated struck flint triangular arrowhead of tranchet derivative type. It is triangular in form and section, with flaring blade end that tapers to a narrow haft end. The neatly worked surfaces have relatively limited edge retouch that is mostly confined to the sides rather than blade end of the arrowhead. An unpatinated and part polished flint axehead of Neolithic date. It is struck from a dark grey/brown flint and has relatively straight sides with a pointed-oval shaped cross section. The blade end is roughly crescentic in form but has suffered from some damage to the cutting edge itself resulting in uneven flake removal. Both faces have extensive and fine flake removal and the remains of polished surfaces are visible particularly in higher areas of the faces and towards the blade ends. An incomplete and reworked polished flint axe of Neolithic date. It is rectangular in form, pointed oval in section and struck from a pale, mottled grey to white flint. Areas of polishing remain visible on both faces and along one edge, but the original object has been subject to extensive bifacial retouch and flake removal, particularly at the crescentic cutting edge, resulting in an object that is probably less than half the length of the original axe. It has perhaps been re-used as a relatively crude axe or alternatively reworked as a core. The entire object measures 82.69mm in len…

An unpatinated and incomplete leaf-shaped lithic implement of Neolithic date. At least half of the object, including the point, is missing due to old breaks. It is struck from a grey flint that has a hinge fracture at one end, all-over bifacial retouch with flake removal and edge retouch on both faces. It measures 49.57mm in length, 24.49mm in width, 5.53mm in thickness, and weighs 6.51g.
This is probably a flint 'Laurel-Leaf' point typical of the Early Neolithic period. Lithics of this form have an unknown function but are sometimes suggested as roughouts for leaf-shaped arrowheads…
