Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic - Bronze Age flint scraper dating 4000 - 801 BC. The flint is roughly triangular in shape. None of the cortex remains, making it difficult to determine how this flake relates to the original core. There is significant retouch on both edges on the dorsal side. The dorsal ridge has been broken towards the striking platform and there is some damage to the bulb of percussion, all of which is likely occurred post-deposition. The flint is of a mid-dark grey. Dimensions: length: 44.83 mm; width: 32.49 mm; thickness: 11.94 mm; weight: 12.24g.

Object type: PICK
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Neolithic - Bronze Age (4,000 - 1,200BC) antler pick. This pick has been constructed from the tip of an antler tine. There is a cut surface across the butt and there is a triangular chip missing; this is probably post depositional damage. A hole has been drilled near the butt to accommodate the haft. The hole has cylindrical sides. There are very distinctive cut marks which indicate a flint tool was used to cut the tine and work on the hole. There is some wear and polishing around the hole which is related to the movement of the haft. The polishing around the tip would part…

A Neolithic stone polished, banded perforated object or 'mace-head' dating c. 2,900 - 2,100BC. The mace-head is rectangular in plan with rounded ends and an oval cross-section. There is an hour-glass perforation located approximately one third along its length. The carving of the mace-head has been worked so the natural banding of the stone forms transverse stripes. When the mace-head was discovered it was covered in, as the finder describes it, a limescale concretion which came off as he rubbed his thumb over it. This was probably Thames 'race'. There is a patch of black near the dis…

A Prehistoric flint fragment of a hammer-stone probably dating 3,500-800BC. There is a lot of damage to this fragment which obscures the detail but there is evidence where this fragment has been used as a hammer-stone to exert blows on another material. Dimensions: length: 62.17mm; width: 28.23mm; thickness: 25.34mm; weight: 52.44g. Notes: Jon Cotton notes that this assemblage of flint is not from one episode of activity within one period, rather it is part of the ‘background noise’ of typical material that would be widely found on floodplain areas. Similar assemblages are kno…
