A polished stone axehead with degraded granular surfaces over majority of the surface. Stone type not analysed, possibly Lake District/ Northumbrian source. Blade end and face of blade lost other side still displays polish. Slightly tapered rounded sides to rounded butt. 280mm in length, 59.8mm in width, 33.2mm in thickness and 440g in weight.

The blade end of a Neolithic polished stone axe head. The blades front profile is slightly asymmetical-curved, in plan it is a relatively straight edge but angled. The axe is somewhat 'bean-shaped' in cross-section at the break. The break is old and worn. The axe is made from an irregular large grained stone, probably a granite, on the surface there is angular glossy black crystalline grains between a matt gre/brown structure visible in cross-section. Blade end of a flint re-worked polished flint axe susquently partially burnt. A large part of the polished blade end of the original axe survives but below this the body has been re-worked with the removal of a number of large flake. Following this the surface, especially on one face, has been affected by discolouristaion and small pocking due to partial burning. Colour is a medium to dark grey/pale/grey. length 70mm, width 53mm, thickness 25mm, weight 75g. The original polished axe is Neolithic in date and the subsquent flaking Neolithic or Bronze Age the date of the burning is unknown.

A polished flint axehead with narrow butt and squared sides. All-over polish with only a few former flake scars present, mainly on butt butt half of axe. Polish is coarse apart from blade end where it is fine. The surface is a mixture of mid brown and grey, possibly partial peat staining. However, one side of the cutting edge has a series of unstained flakes removed at a later date, showing a mid grey flint. These flakes look like retouch but are possibly plough damage that occurred when the axe was buried at the base of the plough line in a sub-vertical position, relatively recently.…
