Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete late Neolithic to Bronze Age stone perforated battleaxe, dating to 2500 - 1800 BC. The axe is broadly triangular in plan. In section the triangular blade narrows sharply to a slightly rounded rectangular butt (rectangular with rounded corners). The axe has a flared blunted crescentic edge. The blade of the battleaxe is on the same alignment (vertical) as the perforation. It is broadly convex in profile and appears complete. The perforation is positioned at a point approximately 1/3 of the way along the length of the axe, closest to the butt end. The perforation itself has a…

A later Neolithic flaked and partially polished axehead, dating to 2700-2350 BC. The tapered butt of the axe remains. The flint was mid grey and has a patchy off-white and blue-white patina. There is a small area of abraded nodule cortex on one face of the axe. It is lozenge shaped in cross section. Some parts of the axe have been polished and it is possible that the missing cutting edge had been refined through polishing. It is also possibly unfinished as a result of the break across the body which may have occurred in an effort to thin it further.

An incomplete Neolithic flaked and polished axe, dating to 4000-2350 BC. The butt of the axe only remains. Made from mid grey flint which has patinated to a chalky off-white with iron staining. It has a lentoid cross section with well developed faceted margins. The faces of the axe are heavily polished. The butt tapers from the break to an out curved terminal. There is some recent damage to the end and sides. The break is of some age as it has re-patinated. It was possibly broken purposefully in order to reuse the raw material.
