Roughout for the manufacture of an axe made from what is likely to be an opaque, blotchy, light grey flint with some recortication. No cortex present but one area of the axe appears to be unworked having a natural fracture. Bifacially flaked to produce a pointed oval section with some battering along the edges. Probably abandoned after the removal of some mis-struck flakes near the cutting edge. Length 121mm, Width 38mm, Thickness 23mm, Mass 145.2g.

Probable roughout for the manufacture of a an axe, made from an opaque, blotchy, grey flint with light recortication. The flint is of poor quality and contains faults. On one face is an area of cortex. Bifacially flaked, to produce a pointed oval section, the implement bears a fortuitous resemblance to a pointed handaxe, a phenomon noted on other Sussex flint mine sites (Curwen, 1954,127-8 Fig. 32). This object is best interpreted as a Neolithic roughout, abandoned early in the process of axe manufacture. Length 136mm, Width 79mm, Thickness 41mm, Mass 390.6g.

Length 64mm, Width 77mm, Thickness 15mm, Mass 62.7g

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Fragment of a Neolithic polished axe, badly damaged in anquity only part of one face and one side surviving. Flaking around the cutting edge suggest that a crude attempt was made to resharpen the axe after breaking. Pointed oval section with facets down each edge. The implement is now fully recorticated making it difficult to describe the flint although it appears to be of mixed colour. Neolithic date. Length 103mm, Width 51mm, Thickness 30mm, Mass 161.9g

Late Neolithic flaked axe with a polished edge, pointed oval section, an area of the original cortex is present as a fault near the butt. The flint appears mid-grey and translucent. Flaking carried out by the removal of large flakes. Both sides are of the cutting edge are polished, the polishing extending for around 6mm. The butt may have suffered some recent truncation. Edge polished flint axes are of late Neolithic date. Length 101mm, Width 42mm, Thickness 26mm, Mass 122.0g

Flaked axe, pointed oval section, no original cortex present but recorticated but for an area near to the cutting edge. The flint appears mid-grey and translucent. Flaking carried out by the removal of large flakes with some battering down the edges. No tranchet sharpening, This object is best seen as late Neolithic. Flaked axe, or more accurately, adze head, D section, one side keeled, the other flat, no original cortex present but recorticated all over. Flint appears to be mixed, light-grey and off-white flint, opaque. Flaking carried out by the removal of large flakes, no tranchet sharpening, This object could be Mesolithic but a late Neolithic date is also possible. Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Published
Flint hammerstone made from a keeled flint core. This bears areas of the original cortex on both of its sides and is recorticated, the flint appears to be mixed grey and opaque. The core was used for the production of wide flakes with knapping taking place on each side to produce the 'keeled' core. It is also possible that this object had been made for use as a 'chopper'. Use of the core as a hammer is evidenced by band of battering which runs around the crest of the keel. Length 86mm, Width 70mm, Thickness 48mm, Mass 292.5g
