County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete struck flint flake probably dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 4000-1500 BC. It is missing its proximal end, which has broken away in old damage. A thick white patina with orangey iron staining covers the dorsal surface while the ventral face is a mottled blue colour, though the original raw material is a mid grey colour. The flake is broadly triangular in plan and section, with a single prominent dorsal arrise giving the piece a somewhat crested appearance. Extensive post-depositional edge damage is visible down both lateral edges. Preserved in reasonable conditi…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A tertiary flint flake of probable later Mesolithic or Neolithic date, c. 6000-2500 BC. Struck from a core of fine grained bluey-grey flint, this piece is blade-like in appearance and likely represents a correction piece originating from a blade core. Triangular in plan, it demonstrates slightly tapering sides that converge to a rounded point, the butt being pointed and the platform of lenticular form. Two dorsal arrises are visible, while on the ventral face the bulb of percussion is visible. The bulb itself is somewhat diffused and flattened, suggesting that this piece may have been…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint arrowhead probably dating to the early Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. This appears to be the base of a leaf-shaped arrowhead, demonstrating a rounded butt and tapering sides that extend to slightly above the midpoint of the original full object, its upper midsection and tip missing in a neat truncation. Knapped from a tertiary flake of fine-grained translucent blackish grey flint, the original flake surfaces on each side have been completely removed by the means of invasive covering retouch (pressure flaking). Preserved in fresh condition it survives to…

County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. It survives relatively intact despite some damage to the cutting edge and extensive breakage to the butt, the latter possibly relating to hafting and subsequent use. In form, it demonstrates characteristic gently expanding sides with a broadly lenticular section, that transition into a convex cutting edge. Manufactured on a fine-grained piece of mottled light greyish flint, the surfaces of the axe are completely smooth and polished-with all removal scars and primary reduction negatives obliterated. L…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped and polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. The butt and midsection are missing in an oblique patinated break, with only the lower body and cutting edge preserved extant. Deep negative flaking on both sides of the axe close to this break suggests this may have resulted from use. Demonstrating a rectangular section and slightly expanding flat sides, the axe has been manufactured on a piece of greyish flint which has now in places patinated to an off-white mottled with blue. Considerable iron staining on both faces marks the location…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint lithic implement (possibly a crude knife) dating to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 3000-1150 BC. The tool appears to have been manufactured on a broadly triangular core rejuvenation flake, the dorsal face highly 'humped' and demonstrating numerous intersecting blade/flake negatives. The ventral face has been worked inversely, with large invasive removals (perhaps soft hammer) creating a rather crude edge. A notch is visible in the opposing edge, though whether this is a knapped feature or simply edge damage remains unclear. Preserved in somewhat patinate…
