Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface has short scaled flaking along all edges with the exception of the blunted proximal edge. There is a minor amount of retained cortex along the distal right hand edge and four predominant negative scars with corresponding arrises. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex due to a bulb of percussion with a shallow negative scar over it, situated at the proximal end. …

A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface has short parallel flaking to all edges with the exception of the proximal edge and two large hinged flake removals in the mesal portion of the dorsal surface All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is convex due to a large bulb of percussion with a shallow negative scar over it, situated at the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake.
