Its side view it is roughly pointed oval. In plan, the butt end is much narrower than the cutting edge. It has been knapped overall. The flint is med grey at the blade end fading to light grey along the adze and has off-white and creamy mottling along its length, some of which is cortex forming. The cutting edge is realtively fine, with minimal damage. The edge has been created using parralel retouch stri…

First is a secondary flake of triangular grey flint with grey cortext on on side, no obvious retouch although possible evidence of secondary flaking some, some white speckles indicaitng beginings of repatination. The second is a leaf-shaped tertiary flake of very light transparent flint with some dark-grey to grey flecks within its matrix. The seocnd piece has a small amount of very abrupt retouch on the top right corner. Measurements: 1) 16.09mm high, 12.52mm wide, 3mm thick and 0.71g …

Short abrupt scaled retouch along right edge of both ventral and dorsal edge, about half way down flake. Percussion scarring is present but very diffuse, possibly indicating use of a soft hammer during orignal flaking. White patina over most of flake save for retouch and breaks. A flint backed blade of likely Neolithic date, c. 4000 - 2200BC. Description: The blade is a thin rough kite shape widening part way along its length and narrower or pointed at each end. It is roughly low and triangular n cross-section with the dorsal face being the concave face. The left side of the dorsal fas has some short scaled low angle retouch creating the blade. Along the right side beige cortex remains helping keep the edge blunt, there is a break in this cortex roughly half way along the edge with a patch of very condensed abrupt retouch blunting a probable accidental fla…

A flint end scraper of uncertain date, likely Neolithic to early Bronze Age (c.4000BC - 1000BC). Description: The scraper is a blunted ovoid, formed from a tertiary flake, with a thin striking platform at the proximal end and a dorsal face has formed by two long even flakes. The ventral face has a pronounced bulb of percussion, bulb scar and substantial conchoidal fractures which suggests it was produced with hard hammer technology, usually associated with flint technology after the middle of the Neolithic. Roughly 75% to the edge, centering on the distal end has short, scaled semi…

A complete late Neolithic to early Bronze Age flint chisel c.2200-1000BC. Description: The chisel is bifacial flaked, narrowed at the top widening slightly towards the blade end. It is roughly flat on one side and convex on the other forming a rough triangle in cross-section. It is has scaled near-covering low angled retouch particularly on its flat side. The convex side has semi-abrupt long scaled retouch. There is cortex on the left side of the convex side and the retouch on this side was likely to have occurred to remove the cortex along this edge. The flint is dark brown, the c…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint implement of uncertain use, likely dating to the Neolithic, c.4000 BC - 2200 BC. Description: The implement is irregularly shaped, in cross-section it is triangular as the dorsal face has a central ridge and is convex. The bulb of percussion is very very subtle as are the conchoidal fractures / rippling. There is irregular short scaled semi-abrupt retouch along the sides. The retouch may in fact be intentional blunting with battering/bashed edge (similar to backed edges of backed blades) rather than retouch but it isn't clear why this would happen on both edges. The impleme…

A small D-shaped flint scraper of early-mid Neolithic date c.3500 - 2200BC. Description: The scraper is made from a D-shaped flake, with very limited short scaled semi-abrupt retouch around the convex side of the scraper. The scraping edge along the flat side is long stepped and semi-abrupt. The flaking to produce the scraping edge almost entirely obscure the bulb of percussion. The conchoidal ripples from the now obscured bulb of percussion and other flaking are quite substantial. The flake is mostly a light browny-grey with some patches of light grey-white, a very dark grey patch by the bulb of percussion and light brown cortex covering the stirking platform. The bulb of percussion is clear and just below the striking platform on the ventral face with very clear ripples down the ventral face due to the striking, both thest features on a clear uncortexed piece of flint suggest hard hammer striking indicative of later prehistoric flint technologies. It has been flaked to shape from a larger piece of flint by covering scaled semi-abrupt flaking. The tool has a hinge fracture at one end is pointed and triangular in plan with cortex still adhering across half of it.
