Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
One scraper made on a thin secondary flake of slightly mottled dark grey flint with a well-developed bulb of percussion and a break along the distal part of one margin, which additionally carries a small area of worn nodule cortex. The distal end and distal part of one margin have been modified by irregular abrupt retouch to form a rough working edge. Unpatinated, and in moderately sharp condition. Neolithic or Bronze Age. 27.5mm long, 23.7mm wide, 5.4mm thick and weighs 4.19g.

A group of debitage which is probably of Neolithic, mainly Early Neolithic date with some possibly Mesolithic material. Total weight 33.72g. Nine unmodified waste flakes (five secondary, four tertiary), all in mottled mid-dark grey flint with paler grey inclusions. Three are broken, with distal ends absent. Some exhibit evidence for core-edge preparation and all are relatively thin and elongate with negligible or weakly formed bulbs of percussion suggestive of use of a relatively soft percussor. As such they are (as a group) unlikely to post-date the earlier part of the Neolithic…

A tranchet arrowhead made across the distal end of a thin blade or blade- flake (width 19mm) of marbled mid-mid-light grey flint. Thick secondary waste flake of mottled mid-light to pale grey flint with part of a banded fossil inclusion. There is almost no bulb of percussion, and the flake may have been struck through the chalky cortex adhering to part of the dorsal surface. One margin has an area of possible slight abrupt retouch, but this is more plausibly post-depositional damage. Unpatinated and in slightly worn, battered condition. Neolithic – Bronze Age. 41.2mm long, 31.2mm wide, 14.5mm thick and weighs 19.72g.

Three pieces of flint debitage of Neolithic to Early Bronze age date. All three are in high quality dark grey flint with pale grey motting, one becoming mid buff and translucent at the proximal end. One is a tertiary flake, two secondary flakes with less than 5% cortext remaining. The cortext is thin suggesting possible pebble flint. Two have bulbs of percussions, one of which has a hinge fracture at the distal end. the third has an irregular break over the proximal end. Scars on the dorsal face suggest repeat removals of flakes from the same platform, parallel to these. There…

Large flint blade with evidence of retouch at both ends, probably a double ended scraper. The blade is thick and D-shaped in section with a flat ventral face and two ridges running down the dorsal face. About 50% of the dorsal face of this secondary blade is still covered in cortex, which is thick, white with pink staining from soil that is partially still adhering. The bulb of percussion has been removed by retouch at the proximal end. On the dorsal face there is evidence of some small flakes removed from the ventral face, either rough shaping or to provide small flakes for use. Both…

Neolithic to Bronze Age irregularly shaped multi-platform flint core, which shows signs of working on almost every surface apart from one area covering about a tenth of the surface, where the worn outer surface of the flint pebble remains. This working takes the form of many irregular scars where small flakes of varying shapes have been removed from multiple platforms including at least two at right angles. There are also a range of later removals due to accidental damage which have removed parts of worked areas. The undiagnostic nature of these scars makes it difficult to date th…

Probably Neolithic cylindrical flint core; one end of a worn flint pebble with evidence for three parallel removals from a prepared platform. The scars sugegst short blade like pieces. About a quarter of the remaining side of the core is damaged with a hackley fracture, but appears unworked. The distal end and about half of the side is also unworked. The flint, including the worked areas, is covered by an orange -brown patina. The pebble surface is water worn with little cortext remaining. Length 24.3mm, Width 26.9mm, Thickness 22.8 Weight: 23.51 gms

Eight pieces of knapped flint debitage, none obviously retouched. Seven tertiary and one secondary piece with c.10% of the dorsal face covered in cortex. Five are small sections of larger pieces, two from the middle of a flake (A1-2) and three distal ends of small blades, one with a modern break (A4), total weight: 2.24 grams. One is a small chip with the bulb of percussion present on the ventral face, weight 0.35 grams, row B. All are two small to draw firm conclusions about how the core from which these were removed was being worked. Two are larger, one is a flake with a clear bulb …

Knapped flint multi-platform core of later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3,300 to 800 BC, possibly originally discoidal. Shallow scars from the removal of large, broad flakes on both faces, irregular (accidental) break along one edge and possibly accidental break along the opposite edge. Both faces have evidence for working in at least two directions at 45 degrees to each other. Removals appear to have been taken off other removals on the other face, rather than a prepared platform leaving an acute angle between the working faces. It is 41.9mm by 35.0mm and 18.0mm thick; it weig…
