Object type: SIDE SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two side scrapers. Both made on secondary chunks with evidence for crude multi-directional working but bulbs of percussion removed by later working. One in pale grey flint has c.15% cortex remaining near one edge and is clearly pebble flint; it weighs 7.05 grams. The other is mid grey with paler mottling and has only a small patch (c.5%) cortex in the centre of the dorsal face and is possibly downland flint, it weighs 16.79 grams. Both have crude semi-parallel, long, shallow to semi abrupt retouch along one convex curved side.

Object type: END SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two end scrapers made on tertiary flakes. Both have bulbs of percussions surviving on the ventral face and evidence of multi-directional working on the dorsal face. Both have short, parallel, semi-abrupt retouch around the distal end. One is in pale grey mottled flint, 4.85 grams, the other in mid grey flint with paler mottling 5.08 grams. The mid-grey piece also has damage on the dorsal face near the proximal end on the right edge, this has created a notch leaving a projecting point. This is chipped but not retouched and may have been used casually as a tool.

Two fragments of scraper. Both are the sides of larger circular or oval scrapers that may have been side or side and end (horseshoe-shaped) scrapers. Both come from large flakes with scalar semi-abrupt retouch around the edge, the length depending on the thickness of the flake. One is in black, high quality flint, 9.05 grams. The other in mid-grey flint with paler mottling and a patch of cortex covering c.40% of the remaining dorsal face near the proximal end, 2.96 grams.

Two flakes and one fragment of a flake. All are tertiary pieces although one is mottled with opaque, sub-cortex like material. All show evidence of previous parallel removals from the same platform. One is in pale grey flint, the others are mid-grey with paler mottling. They weigh 13.20 grams in total and are probably Neolithic or Early Bronze Age in date.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two blade like flakes, one proximal end of a blade and two distal ends of blades with notches or retouch. All are irregular and two (one of the flakes and one of the distal ends) may be chunks of cores as they include the scars from the distal ends of larger removals. The others show evidence of regular parallel removals on the dorsal face. All have retouch in the centre of one or both edges. Three are distinct notches while the two potential core pieces have short lengths of retouch that may be unfinished notches or stem from casual reuse. One is in pale grey flint, another in transl…

Eleven pieces of flint debitage. One is pale buff the rest mid-grey with paler mottling. Three have small areas of cortex, one at least looks like pebble flint. Some have chipped areas form casual use or later damage. The largest is 5.59 grams, the total 20.48 grams. Given other material in the vicinity it may be Mesolithic to Bronze Age in date.

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Proximal end of a knapped chert tertiary blade or flake of probably Neolithic date. The bulb of percussion has been lost to more recent, unpatinated breaks. There is an irregular break at the distal end that is also unpatinated and presumably more recent. Arises on the dorsal face suggest multi-directional working. The chert is a mid rown grey with a white patina developing on the older surfaces. It is 29.8mm long, 29.7mm wide and 7.2mm thick; it weighs 6.16 grams.

Proximal end of a knapped flint secondary blade or flake. Struck off a prepared platform with prominent bulb of percussion and bulb scar and scars on the dorsal face from a similar previous removal. c.10% of the dorsal face is covered in cortex in a strip down the left edge. There is some short semi-abupt scalar retouch worked from the ventral face around the distal end. This has produces a relatively even curve to this edge with a thicker and more irregular area towards the left edge (seen form the dorsal face). Knapped flint flake with extensive retouch, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. The flake has been badly chipped and weathered after knapping obscuring many details. There are clear ripples on the ventral face but the bulb of percussion is missing to a large chip. There is further chipping and probably some deliberate long, shallow scalar retouch around the edges. The dorsal face is domed with no clear arises from previous flake removals but evidence of multiple smaller removals and chips around the edge and shallow invasive retouch across the centre. If there was a retouched cu…

Knapped flint secondary flake, probably Neolithic to Bronze Age in date. The bulb of percussion and a prepared platform survives at the proximal end. The blade is triangular in section with a prominent ridge down the dorsal face with evidence for two previous parallel removals from the core. The edges and distal end are badly chipped with a mixture of old and new damage. Due to the position of previous removals and the effect of knapping it has a natural point at the distal end which could have been utilised. There is a small area (c.5%) of cortex on the dorsal face on the central lin…

Middle of a knapped flint tertiary flake with retouch down one side, probably Neolithic in date. The bulb of percussion has been removed by the retouch and a snap at the distal end but there are strong percussion waves on the ventral face. There is a hinge fracture at the distal end. The right edge (seen from the dorsal face) is irregular and chipped. Along the left edge is short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch. Mid-grey flint with paler mottling. 18.9mm long by 20.8mm wide by 3.7mm thick, 1.17 grams.

There is a small area (c.10%) of cortex on the dorsal face down the left edge. There is a deep notch half way along the left edge which may be deliberate. Distal end of a knapped flint flake. Tertiary flake with the proximal end and bulb of percusison lost to patinated break at proximal end. Scars of previous removals on distal face suggest working form both end of the core. No evidence of retouch. Mid grey flint with white patination. 31.1mm long, 18.8mm wide and 5.9mm thick; 3.03 grams. Single flakes are hard to date in isolation but the multi-directional working might suggest Neolithic - Bronze Age.

Two flint scrapers of probably Neolithic date. Scraper 1: Tertiary flake, bulb of percussion removed but prominent ripples on the ventral face. The dorsal face is almost completely covered in invasive shallow scalar retouch suggesting there may have been an attempt to shape this into a tool such as a discoid knife or even an arrowhead which was then abandoned. Down the right edge seen from the ventral face is short semi-abrupt scalar retouch creating a crude scraper although this edge is still irregular in shape with a projection in the centre. It is translucent dark grey-brown fli…
