Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Knapped flint end scraper, produced on a primary flake struck off the cortex. The dorsal face and the proximal end are still covered with cortex apart from around the edge, due to retouch, and at the proximal end of the dorsal face where two small flakes have been removed, possibly mis-strikes. The object is sub-rectangular in shape with a curved distal end. There is a large bulb on the ventral face. Around the distal end and along the left side of the dorsal face is mostly short, some longer, sub-parallel retouch, abrupt along the side become semi-abrupt around the distal end. The fl…

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Knapped flint flake with extensive retouch, probably an incomplete thumb nail scraper. The tertiary flake has been struck off a platform with a prominent bulb on the ventral face. It has a prominent central aris on the dorsal face and damage at the proximal end. The right edge on the dorsal face is curved in with two large chips removed, one from each face. On the left edge a notch has been made just above the platform presumably to snap the thinner, retouched thumb nail scraper off the platform. Above the notch the side curves out and the back to the almost straight distal end. This …

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Three pieces of knapped flint debitage, one tertiary and two secondary. One of the secondary pieces (with c.20% cortex on the dorsal face) shows clear evidence of being struck off a multi-platform core. The other is the snapped distal end of a larger flake with c.60% cortex on the dorsal face and lots of chips and damage along the right edge of the dorsal face, possibly deliberate or from use. They vary from mid/pale grey to black but are all in high quality flint with paler mottling. They weigh 13.82 grams in total and are probably Late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age from their form an…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two fragments of knapped flint cores.
Fragment one is from a multiplatform core which has been heavily worked down to a small remnant by the removal of flakes. Mid grey flint with paler mottling, 29.8 grams.
Fragment 2 is from the side of a larger core which has been worked in parallel strikes from one platform to produce blades. A step part way down has been created by blades breaking off short and this maybe a core refreshment flake taken off to remove this step. cream cortex remains down one side covering c.15% of the surface. The flint is dark grey with paler…

Knapped chert scraper. It was made on a large flake and is now oval in outline. The bulb of percussion and striking platform have been lost to a large removal at the proximal end, possibly accidental or later damage. The dorsal face has arises from previous removals. There is short, scalar, semi-abrupt retouch around the right edge on the dorsal face becoming longer around the distal end where some chips have been lost. The right edge does not appear to be retouched but has some damage, possibly deliberate blunting. The chert is pale buff, granular and semi-translucent. It is 44.8mm l…

32 chert blades and blade fragments, a few smaller examples could be bladelets or debitage. Those with complete proximal ends show bulbs of percussion and evidence of working off striking platforms. Parallel arises on the dorsal faces suggest regular blade removal off prepared cores. Most are tertiary blades with up to 50% cortex on the dorsal face of some pieces. The chert varies from opaque dark brown greensand chert to mid grey to translucent pale buff with some banded pieces. A few have a white surface patina and may have been burnt. The largest are 61.9 by 21.5 by 11.6mm and 60.5…

Four piercers or awls. One is on a secondary flake of pale grey to buff flint with c.20% cortex on the dorsal face. This flake has a snapped proximal end and a projecting point to the left of the distal end which has been shaped into a piercer or awl. It is 30.6 by 34.3 by 9.7mm. The other three are tertiary flakes in mid to dark grey. Two are leaf shaped and the third is triangular, all have the point emphasised by areas of very short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch running along one side of the point. The largest, triangular, piece is 35.9 by 21.4 by 4.8mm, the smallest 26.0 by 20.3mm …

24 cores and core fragments. Some are the result of neat parallel blade and bladelet removals while others have more irregular multi-platform work. This reflects the different stages of flint work present here (Mesolithic-Early Neolithic and Bronze Age). It does not solely appear to be a factor of the working stage as pieces of all sizes reflect the different work patterns although the smallest pieces which show evidence of working down to the nub extracting small flakes are inevitably multi-platform work. The pieces vary from palest grey to black, remaining cortex on some pieces sugg…

Fragment from the side of a Neolithic polished axe with rough breaks on four sides. Mottled pale to pale-medium flint with fine parallel polishing marks. The remaining piece comes from the middle of a large axe and suggests it was completely polished on both sides with few, if any remaining unpolished chips. It was pointed oval in section with a slightly flattened side. The fragment is 32.5mm thick by 27.6mm wide and the form suggests it does not reflect the full thickness and perhaps just over half the width. It is 60.8mm long and weighs 98.7 grams. The size and presence of complete …

Five scrapers and fragments of scrapers, formed on irregular flakes of medium to pale-medium grey flint, total weight 86.4 grams. The form suggests a Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date, 3500-1500 BC.
a. Large thick flake, triangular in section with a high central ridge on the dorsal face, possibly a reused fragment of a core. No clear bulb of percussion, possibly removed by retouch. There are mottled patches at the end opposite the retouch suggesting the cortex has just been removed and a small patch (less than 5% of surface) or cortex near the wide retouched end. The broad retouched…

Pressure-flaked knife on a thin flake of translucent pale flint with some darker areas dating to the Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. The flake has a clear bulb of percussion on the ventral face and parallel arises on the dorsal face, one ending in a hinge fracture. Down the proximal end of the right edge on the dorsal face is a break while the distal end has been made straight down by short abrupt scalar retouch. Along the left edge and distal end on the dorsal face is semi-invasive parallel shallow retouch, probably created by pressure flaking and creating a knife blade. It is 34…
