Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is a patch of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal edge. This suggests that this flake comes from the secondary phase of tool production. The cortex is white and is similar to that of flint nodules from chalk areas. The underside (ventral face) of the flake shows a small neat bulb of percussion, which is position…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. On one edge is a smooth rounded bevel. This has been created by wear, rather than flaking, and suggests that this piece of debitage is in fact from the re-working o…

A complete but damaged knapped, ground and polished axe-head of probable later Neolithic date (2900-2100 BC). The axe is knapped from a mid grey buff volcanic tuff. This rock type is formed from compressed volcanic ash and has a fine grained composition with infrequent crystalline inclusions. Tuff is found in Britain and Ireland in a band that runs down the Irish Sea from the Lake District (the Langdale's source Group VI), County Antrim (Ireland), through North Wales (Graig Lwyd Group VII), and into Cornwall and Devon (Groups XVI and IV respectively). Volcanic tuff is similar to flint…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly oval in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets caused by flaking and also plough-damage on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. It does however have a clear bulb of percussion and the point of percussion (which created the flake) can be clearly identified. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from t…

Small irregular flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There are also a number of hinge fractures caused by flaws within the flint matrix. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. Reworked debitage flake of probable Neolithic date (3500BC - 2100BC). The tool has been reworked from a piece of tertiary debitage. It is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The flint is relatively coarse and may be chert rather than true flint. The bulb of percussion and striking platform are lost. The front face of the blade (dorsal face) has a number of clear facets and ridges. The edges of one face of the flake have been modified by retouch. These consist of a series of small notches which have created a series of small projections. The presumed us…

Flake of flint debitage (waste product from tool production) of probable later Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). The debitage is from the secondary phase of tool production as one face has a relatively large area of cortex (outer rind of flint nodule) present suggesting that it is derived from nodules bedded in chalk. The flake is irregular in plan and also profile. The dorsal (upper) face has a series of relatively regular flake facet scars present whilst the ventral (lower) face shows a clear bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples. These are in the same plane to the flake scars on …

Relatively large flint scraper (side and end) of probable later Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). The scraper is formed from a large chunky flint secondary waste flake, which was probably a bi-product of other tool production. It is broadly oval in plan and cross section. The scraper measures 28.8mm length, 26.9mm width, is 9.6mm thick and weighs 6.94 grams. The scraper has significant retouch applied to the upper (dorsal) face. This secondary working is primarily limited to the cutting edges positioned along one side and the base. Here a series of regular overlapping neat smal…

Knapped and flaked flint knife blade / or possible scraper of later Neolithic date. The scraper is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has been formed from a struck blade-like flake which has come from the secondary phase of knapping. Several larger ‘relic’ scars are present on the upper (dorsal) face which have been caused by striking other flakes prior to the removal of this blade. A small section of white cortex is present on one edge; this cortex is white and similar to that observed on nodules from chalk or limestone bedding planes. On the ventral…

Possible polished axe-head or model of an axe-head of later Neolithic (2900-2100 BC). There is a great amount of debate in the identification of this artefact. In shape and form it is very similar to known polished axes of the Neolithic period, however, it seems to have been formed from a sedimentary 'mud stone' rock. This is highly unusual as the stone is thought to be too soft for tool production, hence the alternative interpretation as a potential model, in that it looks and would have acted as an axe in every way apart from being functional. The mudstone axe is shaped, probably kn…

Large flake of tertiary debitage which has been burnt in a fire. The flaking suggest a Neolithic date (c. 3500-2100 BC). The flake is irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in cross section, evidence for flaking is present and it is possible that one small area of the dorsal face has been reworked as small relatively neat facets are present. If this were used as a tool it is likely it was produced ad hoc and discarded once a short lived task had been formed. The reworking has been applied to a crescent and it is possible that the flake was used for scraping, possibly something l…

Irregular flake of debitage, from the secondary phase of tool making: it most likely dates from the later Neolithic period (2900-2100 BC). The upper dorsal face exhibits lateral flake scars from the removal or narrow flakes. The dorsal face also has a large amount of white cortex, similar to that seen on nodule of flint procured from chalk. The reverse (ventral) face has a single bulb of percussion and associated conchoidal ripples. The direction of this is at 90 degree to that on the ventral face. It is possible that part of one edge has been reworked with short blunt secondary flakin…
