An incomplete knapped and flaked flint knife blade / scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (3000-2000BC). The knife is formed on a flake of secondary debitage. The fragment is broadly oval in plan and has a D shaped cross section. The dorsal face has multiple flaking facets and the edges have been retouched with neat well organised overlapping flakes which can be described as invasive semi-abrupt and stepped. A small area of yellow cortex is present on the dorsal face and this is stained an orange colour by the environment. From this area of cortex relatively neat flake…

A large substantial backed knife of later Mesolithic or Neolithic date (6500-2000 BC). The knife is formed on a a broad tertiary blade with a distinct baked ridge on the dorsal face created by removals of previous blades. The distall end of the ventral face has a clear bulbar scar and bulb of percussion however the prepared striking platform has been removed by snapping and retouch. The long edges of both sides of the dorsal face have been retouched with acceptional care and skill. The retouch can be catagorised as being short scaled semi-abrupt. The blunted end / nose is likewise ret…

A fragment of a snapped knapped flint knife blade of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The knife is formed from a relatively narrow blade of mid grey coloured flint; the upper edge is lost. In plan the knife fragment is broadly rectangular and in cross section it is a sub-oval shape. The working reworking and retouch on the dorsal face is detailed and well applied; it is most heavily applied with small rounded regular flakes being removed; this flaking is very compact and neat being achieved with great skill; it is best described as short scaled and semi-abrupt. There are seve…

A fragment of a snapped knapped flint knife blade of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The knife is formed from a broad flake of mid grey coloured flint. In plan the knife fragment is broadly rectangular and in cross section it is a similar sub-oval shape. The ventral face is struck from the opposing direction to the work on the dorsal face and is typical of Neolithic flake based working. The working reworking and retouch on the dorsal face is detailed and well applied; it is most heavily applied with small rounded regular flakes being removed; this flaking is very compact and…

An early to middle Neolithic ovate 'laurel leaf like' knife, dating from the period c. 3500-2900 BC. The tool is formed on a mid-orange yellow mottled coloured pieced coarse 'local flint'. In plan the flake is a pointed oval or cordate shape and in cross section it is broadly sub-oval (D-shaped). The tool is formed on a broad blade like flake; the ventral face shows conchoidal ridges and the blade has been struck from a prepared core. The upper / dorsal face shows two parallel ridges. The long edges have been reworked bifacially using both hard and soft hammer being neat and well org…

An incomplete knapped lithic implement most probably the tip of a bi-facially knapped flint knife or scraper of Neolithic date (3500-2100BC). The knife is formed on a thing sub-triangular snapped flake with an oval cross section. The fragent represents a much larger tool which has been broken across the tip. Both the long edges on both faces have been reworked with a series of short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch has been applied to form a arc shaped cutting and scraping edge. Further on the ventral face less well organised retouch is present in the same area. The other edges of t…

A fragment of knapped flint knife - or possibly a reworked projectile point of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900 BC - 1800 BC). The flint is sub-triangular in plan and an irregular trapezoid in cross section. The flint has been worked from a larger flake and the ventral face shows evidence of conchoidal ripples. The two long edges of the dorsal face show evidence of significant retouch which has been applied through pressure flaking; these have created a neat serrated edge. The lower short edge has several areas of vertical knapping on the butt suggesting it has been del…

Knapped and flaked flint knife blade / scraper of later Neolithic date (3000-2000BC). The scraper is unusual as it is formed from a large piece / flake of secondary debitage. It seems to have been formed crudely and possibly discarded relatively swiftly; this is unusual in an area which has very small natural reserves of flint. The scraper / knife is broadly oval in plan and oval in cross section. It has multiple flaking facets on both faces, some of which seem to have been used to remove relatively narrow blades whilst others larger flakes. There are also a number of irregular uncon…

Knapped and flaked flint knife blade / or possible scraper of later Neolithic date. The scraper is irregular in shape being broadly a lozenge in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has been formed from a struck flake which has come from the tertiary phase of knapping. Several larger 'relic' scars are present on the upper (dorsal) face which have been caused by striking other flakes prior to the removal of this blade. Two relatively modern breaks are present caused presumably by degradation in the ploughsoil. On the ventral (reverse) face clear evidence of conchoidal fractures are p…

Knapped and flaked flint knife blade / or possible scraper of later Neolithic date. The scraper is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has been formed from a struck blade-like flake which has come from the secondary phase of knapping. Several larger ‘relic’ scars are present on the upper (dorsal) face which have been caused by striking other flakes prior to the removal of this blade. A small section of white cortex is present on one edge; this cortex is white and similar to that observed on nodules from chalk or limestone bedding planes. On the ventral…

Fragment from the butt of a flint knife of probable Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1500 BC). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. It measures 31.3mm length, 30.4mm width, is 4.7mm thick and weighs 3.57 grams.
The fragment is relatively thin and broken across its widest edge. It consists of the butt of a relatively fine and well made knife or dagger. Both faces exhibit areas of very fine pressure flaking and the edges also show evidence of retouch. It is possible that the flake has been reworked after breaking and used as a form of blad…
