A complete late Neolithic oblique (British oblique) flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been created from a mid - dark brown coloured piece of flint. It is broadly triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple / invasive flaking. It is unsymmetrical in shape; a barb extends at one corner creating a curved tang. Both the long edges of the arrowhead have been retouched to create sharp serrated blades. One face of the arrowhead has received mor…

An incomplete tang / long barb from a late Neolithic oblique (British oblique) flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a pale mid grey coloured piece of flint. It is broadly rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The head of the arrowhead is lost through a modern break. The external long edge of the tang has been worked and shaped on only the dorsal face. The retouch applied is best described as scaled, short and semi-abrupt. Similar flint oblique arrowheads are associated with Grooved pottery of the later Neolithic 3000 - 2100 BC (Butler 2005: 158-160 after G…

An incomplete late Neolithic oblique flint (ripple-flaked oblique) arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a fine good quality matt grey piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section; the tip, side barb and tang have all been lost; the breaks are recent and unabraded. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as being retouched using pressure / ripple / invasive flaking best caracterised as covering, parallel low angled retouch. This flaking is of the highest qual…

An incomplete late Neolithic oblique (British oblique) flint arrowhead. This arrowhead has been knapped from a mottled poor quality mid grey coloured piece of flint. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple / invasive flaking. It is unsymmetrical in shape; an incomplete broken barb extends at one corner whilst the other - which descends to form a tang - is broken. Both the long sides of the arrowhead have been retouched…

A triangular shaped point possibly a British Oblique Arrowhead dating from the later Neolithic or possibly early Bronze Age periods (2500-1800 BC). The point or arrowhead is knapped form a mid mottled grey coloured flint, being struck on a flake shape with a single transverse ridge. The flake is relatively thin and there is no invasive ripple flaking (commonly seen on these types of arrowhead) on the dorsal (or ventral) faces. Two long edges have been retouched with even regular and neat edges being applied. A slight point has been knapped at one corner and another has been lost throu…

A near complete leaf shaped flint arrowhead (projectile point) of probable early Neolithic date (3000-2500 BC). The arrowhead is 'kite-shaped' in that it is broadly triangular in plan with graduated expanding edges from a pointed tip to a relatively flat, in-turned, base. In cross section the arrowhead is broadly lentoid. The arrowhead has been formed from a broad relatively thick blade, and the upper (dorsal) face has a series of longitudinal blade scars present suggesting that the blade had been removed from a relatively well worked core. The lower (ventral) face shows clear conchoi…

It is sub-triangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead measures 23.9 mm in length, 17.7mm maximum width, and is 3.7mm thick. It weighs 1.16 grams. The tang of the arrowhead is 6.4mm long and 5.5mm wide. The arrowhead has been knapped using a number of different techniques, including direct and indirect percussion, as well as pressure / ripple flaking. Leaf shaped flint arrowhead (projectile point) of probable early Neolithic date (3000-2500 BC). The arrowhead is ‘kite-shaped’ in that it is broadly oval in plan with graduated expanding and tapering edges that form a pointed tip to a relatively wide mid point which tapers to the base. In this example there is damage at the base. In cross section the arrowhead is broadly lentoid. The arrowhead has been bi-facially worked with pressure ‘ripple’ flaking that covers almost the entire body of the arrowhead. The long edges and point have been flaked most heavily. The thickness of th…

Incomplete leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Later Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is lentoid (diamond shaped lozenge) in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped from a light-mid brown orange flint with a series of white flecks in the matrix. It measures 28.3mm length, 19.3mm width, is 4.9mm thick and weighs 2.06 grams. Both faces of the arrowhead have been pressure (ripple) flaked with a series of small neat regular narrow facets. Much of this rippled surface has been flaked with skill. Incomplete leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Later Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is lentoid in plan and cross section. A large section of the lower part of the arrowhead has been lost due to a modern break. The damage is positioned below a flaw / brown inclusion in the flint which is probably a natural weak spot in the matrix. The arrowhead has been knapped from a light-mid grey translucent flint with a series of white flecks in the matrix. It measures 17.8mm length, 14.9mm width, is 3.2mm thick and weighs 0.8grams. Leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable Later Neolithic date (2900 - 2150 BC). The arrowhead is lentoid in plan and cross section. It has been knapped from a light-mid brown translucent flint. It measures 39.2mm length, 15.1mm width, is 4.6mm thick and weighs 2.43 grams. Both faces of the arrowhead have been pressure (ripple) flaked with a series of small neat narrow facets. Much of this rippled surface has been flaked with skill. This is most evident around a small flaw in the flint near the base of the arrowhead. Here several flakes have been used to remove some of a large hinge frac…
