An Early to Middle Neolithic knife knapped from a mid-brown coloured flint dating to circa 4000 - 3500 BC. The flint object is D shaped in plan and is knapped from a secondary flake. The dorsal face has been re-worked on the straight edge from the proximal to distal end. The retouch is long, stepped and semi-abrupt. The opposing long edge has cortex present covering 50% that would have enabled the flint to be handled and used as a knife. The other 50% of the long edge has a 'backed edge' with abrupt retouch. The distal end on the dorsal face has been knapped to form a point. The ventr…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Neolithic (4000 - 2100BC) debitage in the form of a tertiary flake. The dorsal surface has been worked in opposing directions. One edge has evidence it has been ground rather than knapped to create a serrated cutting edge. The opposing long edge on the ventral face has short, sub-parallel low angle retouch. The ventral face has conchoidal ripples and a bulb of percussion and two flaking scars. The flint is a dark grey colour with light grey inclusions. The flint measures 25.88mm long, x 13.44mm wide x 4.75mm thick, weighing 2.1g.

An irregular shaped piece of tertiary debitage / waste flake which has been reworked to form a scraping tool dating from the Neolithic period circa 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The waste flake has evidence of multi-directional working. The dorsal face has numerous flake scar removals and the long edge has long, stepped semi-abrupt retouch. The distal end has also been rounded and sharpened suggesting that it was reformed to make a crude side and end scraper. The flint is a dark grey colour with small white inclusions. The flake measures 26.4mm in length, 18.98mm width, is 3.06mm thick and …

Object type: THUMB NAIL SCRAPER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A thumbnail scraper of early to middle Neolithic date circa 4000 - 3500BC. The scraper is formed on a cream coloured tertiary flake of flint. The scraper is sub-triangular in plan, with a pointed distal end and rounded proximal end. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets and the retouch is best described as being invasive, scaled and semi-abrupt. Less retouch has been applied to the edges on the ventral face which are mainly concentrated along two sides. The retouch on the ventral face is long, scaled and semi-abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool f…

A flint scraper of probable later Neolithic date (2700 -2350BC). It is broadly sub oval in plan and irregular in cross section. The scraper is formed from a blade like flake of tertiary debitage, on course grained flint. The scraper is mid to dark grey coloured. There is a small area of cortex present on the upper surface edge. The retouch is short, sub-parallel and abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool found within flint assemblages of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age (Beaker) date, being a multi-function cutting and scraping tool which were infrequently haf…

County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete leaf shaped flint arrowhead of probable earlier Neolithic date (4000 - 2700 BC). The arrowhead is ogival / lentoid (a diamond shaped lozenge) in plan and lentoid in cross section. The arrowhead has been knapped from a light-cream to brown flint which is opaque in places. Both faces of the flint show invasive, scaled, low angled retouch. The dorsal face has scaled diagonal flaking across the entire surface. The ventral face also has scaled flaking which has a greater concentration around the proximal end. The lower edge on one side was possible broken in antiquity and then r…

A flint thumbnail (horseshoe) scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC).It is broadly rectangular in plan and an irregular oval in cross section. The scraper is formed from a dark grey coloured piece of primary debitage. The dorsal surface is covered approximately 90% by cortex. The retouch around the curved edges of the scraper extend to around three quarters of the flint. The retouch is short, parallel and abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool found within flint assemblages of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age (Beaker) date, being a …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint tertiary debitage flake of probable Neolithic date (3000-2200 BC). The flake is sub-rectangular in plan and irregular rectangular (D-shaped) in cross section. The flake has sharp corners at both the distal and proximal ends. The flint is a fairly even grey white colour with a very smooth ventral face. There is evidence for hard hammering re-touch on the dorsal face. The rest of the flint shows little evidence of retouching. The debitage measures 21.4mm length, 16.02mm width and is 5.38mm thick and weighs 2.3 grams.

A flint thumbnail (horseshoe) scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is sub-circular in plan and an angular sub-oval shape in section. The scraper is formed from a light and dark grey coloured piece of flint. The scraper includes a sub-circular brown coloured inclusion on the ventral surface, this aesthetic quality may have made this particular flint desirable to the original owner. The tool has been created on a thick tertiary debitage flake. The dorsal surface bares long, sub-parallel, abrupt retouch/secondary flaking. The retouch around the …
