Pale grey flint with cortex possible knife fragment. A large flake with an apparently curved cutting edge, neatly truncated on one end where a flat and possibly smoothed surface of lentoid form appears. A large flake has been removed from behind the putative cutting edge by hard hammer strike from the dorsal aspect, possibly affording a thumb rest. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect appears to follow the curving edge, its progress marked by the removal of a pale patinated surface to reveal the pale grey flint below – though a similar colour change also appears …

Pale buff flint knife, as kindly identified by the finder. A curved triangular-section flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the broader end of its ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curving convex outer edge of the concavo-convex form. Dense creamy patina suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment; the tint of flint is revealed by a small chip at the narrow end. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC Length: 38.6mm, Width: 16.8mm, Thickness: 6.4mm…

Black flint knife. A thin oval flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its bulbar ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows part of one long straight edge. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect also follows the opposite straight edge. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 28.3mm, Width: 20.7mm, Thickness: 5.4mm, Weight: 3.27gms

Grey-buff flint knife, as kindly identified by the finder. Trapezoid flake with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight –and perhaps broken before that reworking – edge. This edge is also lightly battered. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows an adjacent and slightly longer side to form a more robust cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 30.1mm, Width: 30.9mm, Thickness: 7.1mm, Weight: 5.44gms

Grey flint knife. Flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional working, and with a bulb and platform at the broader end of the ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect strays across one side and may follow one edge to produce a knife without a back edge, but the flake is probably neither finished nor further used. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 27.8mm, Width: 19.3mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 3.14gms

Opaque pale grey-buff flint knife. Thick sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a markedly bulbar ventral surface; cortex has re-formed over the associated striking platform. Invasive long angled parallel retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a cutting edge along one straight side and a more limited zone at the site of an opposite lobe. Invasive angled scalar retouch also trims the bulbar ventral surface, and very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect forms a more ephemeral cutting edge along an adjacent long side. Grey flint knife. Flake with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. Milky patina suggests the object subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long edge from the bulb to form a short cutting edge, and very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect also follows the wavy edge of the broader end to blunt or trim it; these features may suggest reuse of a previously discarded and weathered flake. Translucent brown flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, knife. Sub-triangular thin flake with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface; broad flakes are removed from the dorsal side by hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, removing a powdery-looking patina which is typical of beach-sourced flint, ending on a short positive hinged fracture. The ’butt’ is also battered. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 39.4mm, Width: 31mm, Thickness: 10.3mm, Weight: 9.36gms

Pale buff flint possible knife fragment. Perhaps one half of a thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat or very slightly concave ventral surface. A long narrow flake is struck from along a putative cutting edge. The form might also suggest an over-sized barbed and tanged arrowhead, though the concave ventral surface would probably interfere with flight if it were so deployed. Milky patina suggests the object to have endured exposure to a calcareous environment; the break or breaks [a smaller break appears at the base/butt end] is more recent. Sugge…

Honey-coloured opaque flint knife. A small straight-sided flake of plano-convex section with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of an otherwise flat ventral surface. Brown flint knife fragment. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. One straight edge is formed by a positive hinge fracture. A milky patina has formed over the dorsal side and, to a lesser degree, on the ventral surface, suggesting the two sides have endured a varying degree of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina has been removed by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following part of one straight edge, indicating the reuse of a previously discarded object. It is perhaps significant that after this re…

Pale grey-buff flint knife fragment. A straight-sided flake with a rounded end, with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the curved end of its ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one straight edge; chips at the curved end are perhaps adventitious damage, the larger flake being lost in antiquity and the smaller more recently.
