Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex spot and re-forming cortex, borer. Rhomboid flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with larger flakes struck from the ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the converging sides of the putative working point. Patches of patina suggest the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment; they are lost along one aris. Grey-brown flint with re-formed cortex, scraper. An irregular flake with broad flakes struck from its original dorsal surface and with a bulbar ventral surface. The latter has acquired a white patina from exposure to a calcareous environment on its ventral side, and a sandy cortex re-formed across the dorsal side. After a significant interval of time, the flake was reused and cortex was interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, following a curving edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 42.1mm, Width: 34.3mm, Thickness: 9mm, Weight: 12.01gms

Dark grey flint adze. Flaked adze, of oval section with covering angled scalar retouch extending across both its sides, and with traces of light battering at either end. Slightly tapered in form. The lack of any patina might suggest this object to have recently been disturbed from a sealed context. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, probable laurel leaf knife. An oval flake with its dorsal side side covered by a fine buff patina perhaps acquired during water-rolling on the seashore, and the other bearing a dense white patina indicating long exposure to a calcareous environment, and with a cavity from an inclusion or fossil [now lost]. The dorsal side is trimmed by short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and following one long curving edge. Apparently similar chips on the ventral side, however, are probably adventitious impact damage. A long period m…

Grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface and striking platform. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge opposite the platform or butt. Slight misty patina on struck surfaces may suggest the object has subsequently endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Chipping on the ventral surface is probably adventitious recent damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 27.4mm, Width: 31.1mm, Thickness: 7.4mm, Weight: 7.06gms

Dark brown flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. A small thin triangular flake with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side and a slightly concave ventral surface. Of the three edges, one was originally formed as a positive hinge fracture, one is roughly serrated, and the third is smooth, thin and flat, and may have permitted force to be brought to bear on either of the other edges. Grey semi-translucent flint possible oblique or transverse arrowhead. A thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a slightly concave ventral surface with a bulb at one end, which is chipped, probably recently. The bulb would have been the site at which an arrowhead would be hafted. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC Length: 20.9mm, Width: 20.0mm, Thickness: 2.7mm, Weight: 1.42gms

Dark grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. A thick sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with an uneven ventral surface which includes part of a large bulb. Misty patina has formed over the struck surfaces, suggesting the object had endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina has been removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following one straight edge. Dark grey flint, possibly collected from the East coast, discoidal knife. A thin oval flake, possibly naturally formed by frost action as a pot lid fracture, bears a dense white patina across the ventral surface, suggesting that side had endured a long period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina is removed at the edge at one end by short abrupt retouch executed from the [original] ventral aspect, though a sufficiently long period had elapsed between the initial detaching of the flake and reworking to enable the patina to form. This narrow zone of retouch is extended al…

Opaque grey flint possible backed blade. A thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a slightly concave smooth ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect has trimmed the aris left between the larger flake removal sites, appearing as a pair of chattered lines on the surface. Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, possible backed blade. A narrow four-sided rod with opposed flat faces, a convex surface of re-formed patina on a water-smoothed surface, and a cutting edge formed by invasive angled scalar retouch on the opposite face. It is presumed the cortex was retained to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the worked cutting or scraping edge. A lack of patination may hint at its subsequent incorporation into a sealed context. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 58mm, Width: 14.6mm, Thickness: 12.4mm, Weight: 14.25gms

Brown flint adze. A thick oval flake with rounded angled ends and a broad [15.8mm] flat facet along one long edge. Both sides bear covering angled retouch executed with hard hammer, and traces of battering along that long edge opposite a flattened facet. Edge-on impact scars occur here, suggesting some adapted use of the tool with the flat facet enabling pressure to be brought to bear on a working edge. An elongated side facet might also appear on a Neolithic polished axehead. The surface is smoothed, possibly from rolling in surf. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 12…
