Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset

An incomplete ground greenstone axehead. A triangular axehead with flattened sides. The cutting edge is convex and slightly offcentre. The axehead tapers to the broken butt. One face remains convex, the other has been damaged. The cross section is sub-lenticular. The surface has been pecked and ground and is slightly pitted as a result of weathering. The origin is uncertain, but it is possible that it originated on Cornnwall or South Wales.

The dorsal face is covered with fairly regular low-angle invasive retouch.

A tertiary flake of Portland chert. Dark grey opaque chert with a low-gloss patina. The proximal end has a small striking platform and there is a well defined, small bulb of percussion with bulbar scar on the ventral face. The waves of percussion are visible on the ventral face. There are numerous parallel flake removals, in two directions of working, on the dorsal face which are indicative of blade production. The flake is from a core with two opposing platforms. The force of the hard hammer or indirect strike has twisted at the distal end, plunging along the lip of the opposed platfo…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published
Polished flint axe. Incomplete and re-worked. The butt has been broken off. Light brown and beige mottled greensand chert. The cutting edge curves out and is highly polished. Behind the cutting edge the body of the axe has been notched on both sides. It is likely that this was done in order to re-haft the axe after the butt end had been broken off. There are remnant flaking scars within the polish and further flaking scars in the subsequent re-working and towards the butt of the axe. The axe has a pointed oval profile. Late Neolithic. Dimensions - 48.91 x 51.15 x 12.62 mm. Weight - 36.87g
