Part of an Early Neolithic greenstone adze blade, of sub-oval profile and lenticular section. The tool is polished on all surfaces, but has a number of damaged areas close to its edges, and is incomplete (the butt has broken away). Neither the blade edge nor the broken edge is still sharp. This adze fragment weighs 560g and measures 170mm in length, 101mm in width and 23.7mm in thickness. The complete tool would have been of considerable size. The stone is a blue-green colour and is likely to be a particular form of tuff known as 'greenstone', which has its source in Great Lang…

A Neolithic or Bronze Age macehead, carved from the basal area of a red deer (Cervus elaphus) antler. The porous core of the antler has been removed, so as to form a hollow cylinder that could easily be hafted to a handle. A large transverse hole (diameter 24.9mm)has been bored through the antler beam, so that it crosses the hollowed out core, and emerges through the cortex on the other face. This perforation is almost perfectly circular, and must have been done with a purpose-made tool. Notably, the edges of the perforation are smooth, relatively sharp, and show no evidence of wea…

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small Neolithic polished axe made from a fine grained, green igneous rock typical of the Lake District. Recent damage to butt end of the axe, and several recent chips on the blade. Possible original flaking on the side of the axe which has been obscured by the more recent damage. Greenish patination. The implement has been extensively knapped and highly polished into a sub-oval shape. The axe is wedge-shaped and the edges of the axe are chamfered and well finished. The axe dates from between circa 3500 BC to 2100 BC.

Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age (approx. 2100BC – 2000BC). Elongated barbed-and-tanged arrow head. Light grey flint. No evidence of re-touching. Tip chipped. Likely to have been made on a small-scale for personal use, rather than a large-scale production industry. They are quite often found in graves, suggesting that they also had a largely symbolic quality (Edmonds, 1995, "Stone Tools and Society").

A worked flint flake, There are at least three scars from previous blades that have been struck from it so it has, been struck from a blade core. It's size suggests maybe a rejuvenation flake to create a new striking platform on the core. There doesn't seem to be any further reworking on the flake so it was probably discarded and the core carried on being used for blades.

Almost rectangular in section. Bulb of percussion barely visible. Signs of pressure flaking around the curved edge. This is possibly an incomplete example, and is not typical of complete flint scrapers.
