A modern copy of an Early Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward the Elder (899-924), based upon Norrth 660 (floral penny) albeit seemingly intended to be a halfpenny version, of which no real examples are known. The style and flan of the coin are not consistent with an early-medieval piece- the flan is too smooth and the design/inscription too well defined and crisp. It may be an 'Ashmore copy' who produced a very similar fake penny of this type (T. Abramson 'Anglo-Saxon counterfeits', p.152). Dr Gareth Williams, The British Museum, has examined images of this coin and others found with it and identified them as modern replicas produced from dies by Mr Trevor Ashmore. Examples of these replicas can be found in the British Museum, Coins and Medals, forgeries cabinet and all four examples of these replica coins are represented in an upcoming catalogue of modern replicas/fakes.
