Pottery. Fine oxidised fabric with slight mica dusting on its surface. Miniature wheel thrown-vessel, in the form of a jug with plain rim – no pouring spout – and with a biconical body with expanded pedestal base [turning lines on base] and with an applied corrugated strap handle with a trefoil lower end. Dark-stained on one side, chipped at rim. Probably a tourist souvenir from the Mediterranean. The finder kindly reports that Roman material was discovered when nearby houses were built [on Roman Way], and miniature vessels were used in the Roman period, especially as grave…

Incomplete Post Medieval black ceramic teapot lid knop, c. 1750-1800 AD. The artefact is a moulded black basalte ware knop from a teapot lid or similar vessel in the form of a sitting woman wearing a veil, her head leaning against her left hand and holding a basket in her right hand. She wears sandals which peek out from beneath her dress, and a jug and barrel lean against her left arm. The figure sits atop a small pedestal, beneath which is the broken body of the lid of the vessel. The underside of the lid reveals circular marks revealing that it was turned on a wheel. Over…

A piece of the partly vitrified kiln muffle from a clay pipe kiln.  This was a permanent chamber constructed within the kiln structure that held the pipes during firing.  It is typically made of previously fired pipe stems that were used like the sticks in wattle and daub to support the walls during construction.  The walls are typically composed of tempered pipe clay and the interior surface was repeatedly smeared with white clay in between firings to seal any cracks and prevent flue gasses from entering and discolouring the pipes.  Muffle kilns were used for firin…

A group of seven fragments of ‘stem slag laminate’ waste from a clay pipe kiln (Peacey 1996, 93-94 and 168-171). The largest fragment measures 126.8mm in length and 249.68g in weight. This type of material was used to create a temporary cover to seal the pipes in a muffle kiln during firing.  It is characterised by a layer of previously fired pipe stems which was used to support a coating that was typically made of clay, ash and horse dung.  This coating fused to form the slaggy layer during firing and protected the contents of the muffle from becoming …

A group of nine curved kiln furniture supplements - mainly ‘applied strips’, which are hand formed clay rolls that were used to stabilise the load in the kiln during stacking.  The fragments have sub rounded cross sections varying from 7 to 15mm in thickness. These typically have contact impressions of the pipe stems or bowls on them and were only used once, being discarded after the firing.  The more tightly curved piece may be a ‘wad’, used to bed a mushroom support in the centre of the muffle against which the unfired pipes were stacked.

Fired clay figurine. A handmade oxidised terra cotta bust depicting the face of a moustached and bearded man wearing a pointed Phrygian-style cap. Below the beard, the object tapers to form a narrow oval-section pedestal base. An incomplete Modern tobacco pipe made from a cream coloured clay and likely dating to AD 1800-1900. The fragment comprises most of the bowl and a minute part of the stem. Whilst around half of the bowl is missing, the surviving sections would suggest that the internal diameter was 16.31mm and the external diameter was 23.28mm. There are c. 0.85mm wide raised ribs that start from near the juncture of the bowl and the stem and extend around 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up the height of the bowl. There is no surviving heel or spur and not much evidence to suggest that there was one, which woul…

A fragment of a Post Medieval to Modern tobacco pipe made from a cream coloured clay and likely dating c. AD 1790-1880. The fragment is part of the bowl of the pipe, consisting of just under half of the bowl, and would have represented a hand holding the bowl when complete.  Only around one fifth of the entire rim remains intact.
