A fragment of copper alloy which is sub-rectangular in plan and flat. The two longer sides are original edges, while the shorter sides are broken on an angle. The plate tapers slightly towards the top. The correct orientation is indicated by a stamped crown motif near the lower break on one face. The metal has a grey green patina with red metal below. The fragment is 22.8mm long, 21.7mm wide and 1.9mm thick. 4.9g. The condition of the metal and the shape of the crown both suggest a fairly recent date. The function of this object is not known. It is too thick to be a clog clasp or s…

A copper alloy fantasy coin, a cast imitation probably of 20th century manufacture. Its designs are based on reverse designs of Iron Age silver tetradrachms attributed to the Eastern Celtic peoples of the Danube basin. Genuine coins of this type are themselves imitations of tetradrachms of Philip II of Macedon (and his successors) dating from about 400 BC - 100 BC. For the side with the right-facing horseman and the inscription, reading PHILIP[] in Greek, see D Allen, Catalogue of the Celtic Coins in the British Museum, Volume I, Silver coins of the East Celts and Balkan peoples (J Ke…

A cast copper alloy scoop or spoon, probably from a 19th century seed drill or similar piece of agricultural machinery. The object has similarities with Roman toilet spoons and ligulae (such as those in Crummy 1983), but the lack of decoration, the thickness of the scoop and shaft and degree of finishing all suggest a Modern date. The object is a rod which is oval in section and cigar shaped, thicker in the middle than at the ends. The rod or shaft is 58mm long. It has a maximum diameter of 5.1mm and a diameter of 3.7mm at the bowl end. The sides of the rod are slightly faceted and…

A British Historical Medal commemorating the 1814 Treaty of Paris, signed on 30 May 1814, which ended the war between France and the Sixth Coalition, part of the Napoleonic Wars. The medal depicts Louis XVIII on one face with the legend VIVE LE ROI / LOUIS XVIII, and says: PEACE / 1814 within a wreath on the other, with the legend: THE GLORIOUS RESULT OF BRITISH PERSEVERANCE around. The medal is pierced at 12o'clock and this type is catalogued as number 811 in British Historical Medals by T Kettle. The Louis face is very worn on this example.

Part of a copper alloy enamelled hinged fitting dating from the Post Medieval period. It is square with two tubular fitting on one side which would have interacted with a similar central tube on the missing half of the hinge, via an axis bar. There is also a small square transverse suspension loop in the centre of the top edge. Unusually, both faces of the hinge plate are decorated, so either it is unclear how the hinge fitted to any larger object. The outer side has a floral design; a large central six petalled flower with annulets and trilobed elements in the corners. The background…

A brass, die-struck, octagonal apothecaries' weight for the value of two scruples dating from 1850 - 1971 AD. The weight is 17.96mm long, 15.31mm wide and 1.15mm thick. It weighs 1.74g. this is rather lighter than it should be, but corrosion has probably caused the object to lose some of its mass. The weight is rectangular with the corners cut off in plan. It has a beaded border and on the obverse it reads "STANDARD" across the top. In the middle is a lion standing on a crown with a diamond shaped design registration mark on each side. These marks are like copyright marks and the d…

A copper alloy apothecaries' weight dating from the Post Medieval period. It is a sub-square shape in plan, and flat and is marked with five annulets on each side as a mark of value, and also has an illegible maker's mark or owner's initials. It measures 14.73mm by 14.65mm and is 4.17mm thick, it weighs 6.30g. It was probably a weight for measuring 5 scruples, which would be 6.5g, which allowing for some corrosion is a fairly close fit. Similar weights for grains can be seen in Biggs' Apothecaries Weights and a similar example on the database is ESS-5716A1. The weight probably dates f…

A copper-alloy scoop of probable nineteenth or twentieth century date. The scoop, which appears to have been cast in one piece, has a glossy dark green patina. The bowl is circular in plan, has a pronounced curvature and is slightly corroded around the edges. The inside of the bowl is almost conical and faint and thin concentric rings are visible. The stem tapers into the underside of the bowl and is of oval section. The stem is broken a few millimetres from the bowl. The piece measures 22.9mm long, 18.1mm wide and 6.8mm high. A copper alloy unidentified object probably of modern date. The object is circular and is decorated with yellow and white enamel in an abstract design that appears to have similarities to Art Deco style, particularly certain enamelled vases created by Camille Faure in the 1920s. The walls of the cells for the enamel are integral with the copper alloy base. Puzzlingly the design appears to continue off the edge of the object and the cells do not have end walls. However, there is no other evidence for the object being broken. The edge is solid and there are striations that run around the…

A copper alloy seal matrix fragment or printer's block from the post medieval period. It is rectangular with convex sides and the face is finely engraved with a monogram consisting of the letters "I", "E" and "M" intertwining. The ends of each stroke of the letters are ornate and foliate. There is a small circular hole at each side. This was probably either to fix the matrix to a handle, or if the object is a printing block, may have fitted over pins in the tray to keep the block in position. The block is 17.6mm long, 16.1mm wide and 5.7mm thick. The metal is hard and brassy and may h…
