Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Broken intaglio finger ring of probable modern date. It is likely that the item is a modern replica of a Roman style ring, incorporating a carved intaglio which may be older in date. The ring band is broken into three pieces. The breaks have exposed the untarnished metal which is bright silver in colour and very grainy. It is likely a white metal alloy of modern date. The bezel is sub-rectangular in shape and flat. On the upper surface there is a slight oval indent which would have accommodated the setting. The shoulders are almost right-angled and become thinner further down, wher…

Possible modern copy of a Roman denarius. The patina of the coin is shiny but the condition is extremely pitted and worn. This could be an indication of a chemically treated ancient coin, or a poor example of a modern copy. Very few letters are discernible but [V]'ICTO' can be seen on one face. Dimensions: weight: 3.8g, diameter: 23.7mm, thickness: 1.8mm

Fragment of a ceramic ornament in the form of a human female head. The precise original function of the artefact is unknown, but it is likely to be modern (post 1800), and part of a decorative or ornamental feature. It has been suggested that the head could represent part of a ceramic candle holder, of the 'circle of friends' type. The item is solid and seems to have been made in two halves, as there is a raised seam running around the head. The material appears to be terracotta. The features of the face including hair, eyes, nose and mouth are incised and are delicately and int…
