A cast copper alloy 'fob' seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). The seal is formed with a rectangular glass intaglio, rectangular machine pressed body with an applied small suspension loop. It is likely that the body of the setting is hollow and it is decorated with a machine pressed geometric design which has been silvered / tinned. The impression face of the matrix is formed from a cut purple glass intaglio. This is well cut and depicts the laureate crowned head of a youthful women facing right. The lady has curled hair which is gathered at the nape of the neck and a …

A cast copper alloy fitting with a seal matrix inscribed in the upper surface. Due to the smallness and incomplete nature of the find it is difficult to ascertain what it originally fitted to. The remains of an iron shank / pin is present imbedded on one edge. The shape of the matrix is irregular being a waisted pedestal with an irregular octangular (rectangular with corners cut away) die. This die is decorated with a beaded border and a poorly preserved central design, possibly a pair of initials. The style of the matrix would suggest a modern date - c. 1750 - 1900. The artefact has …

The body of the matrix is a rectangular sectioned pedestal which tapers and expands along it's length. The pedestal is undecorated and very plain. The die / seal face is well carved with neat deeply incised design. It depicts two ornate floriated initials W L. The central element of the W (the V) having a fleur-de-lis shaped terminal. An incomplete fragment from a cast copper alloy 'fob' seal of modern date probably later 18th or early 19th Century (1740-1850). The seal matrix is composite, being formed from a clear glass intaglio set into a machine pressed body. The metal body is broken and damaged, the upper part including the loop is lost. The lower part comprises an irregular octagonal (rectangular with the corners taken off) setting with scroll like patterns on the upper surface. A single hole is present in the middle. The intaglio is well cut or possibly moulded; the design consists of a couple engaging in a …

Cast copper alloy fragment from a 'fob' seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). All that survives is the abraded die element which is enclosed within a hoop of copper alloy. The die is formed of a ceramic paste which has decayed in the soil. The reverse of the die is filled with a ceramic adhesive or fine grained cement. The die is abraded and so some detail is lost; the best suggestion of the device is a plumed shield on which is emblazoned a rampant lion. It is possible that the plumed feathers device could alternatively be interpreted as a debased crown. The design is …

A cast copper alloy 'fob' seal of modern date probably later 18th or early 19th Century (1740-1850). The seal is formed with a sub-rectangular mauve / purple coloured glass intaglio. The intaglio is set within a machine pressed body which ascends through moulded foliate scrolls to a small circular hoop. All the metal decoration is machine pressed and heavily gilt. The metal shows through in places where the gilt is lost and is a dark green colour with patches of active purple corrosion. The intaglio is remarkably well cut and intricate in design. It consists of a centrally position …

Cast copper alloy ‘fob’ seal of late Georgian or Victorian date (1750-1850). The seal is formed with a oval glass intaglio, circular machine pressed body with a small ring like hoop and oval suspension loop. It is likely that the body is hollow and it is decorated with a machine pressed floral design which has been gilt. The impression face of the matrix is formed from a cut yellow glass intaglio. Cast silver seal of late Georgian date (1725-1800). The seal is formed with a oval seal face which extends in a graceful tapering stem terminating in a expanded plate with two projecting studs which would have fitted into an organic, wood or bone / ivory, handle. The face of the matrix is engraved with a stylised N with ornate floral curvi-linear scrolls embellishing it. The design is well cut and detailed. As this artefact is not more than 300 years old it does not qualify as treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act. Thanks are extended to Dora Thornton, British Museum, for her commen…

Cast copper alloy seal matrix possibly a fob seal matrix of eighteenth century date (1700-1800). The face of the seal in sub-rectangular (rectangular with rounded corners) in shape. It measures 13.8mm length and 11.6mm width. The reverse rises to a height of 17.5mm terminating in a perforated loop. The body of the matrix is a pedestal formed from four tapering sides.
