Piano Hoard - Summary of findings 2016-T969 (Bishop's Castle Shropshire) I have examined a group of 913 coins reported found hidden within a Broadward Piano from Bishop's Castle Shropshire. The coins are listed in the attached report. Discussion of the find The 913 coins are all British gold coins, mostly sovereigns (634), but with a considerable number of half-sovereigns (280). The face value of the group was therefore £773. They were struck to the same standard, 91.7% gold. Most of the coins were struck at the London mint, but a significant proportion originated in …

An incomplete fragment from a gold bracelet dating from the late Victorian period (c. 1865-1890). The bracelet is misshapen and flattened in the soil; it is rectangular in shape and section. The front face has an intricate applied surface of wires formed into a series of geometric bands and rectangular borders. The central element is a series of wires forming six-petalled flowers set within square shaped plaques. These are bordered by repeating U shaped scrolls with circular annulets of wire in each corner. At one end is a dome headed rolled gold locking pin. The opposite edge is frag…

A gold ring of probable 18th or 19th century date (1750-1900). The ring is probably too small to be considered a finger-ring, although it may be small enough for a child. The ring is formed from a single hoop brazed and hammered together, a clear joint can be seen. The hoop is decorated both internally and externally with a double interlocking chevron pattern (<<<<<<<<<<<<) which extends around the entire internal and external faces. This pattern therefore looks similar to platted rope.A single median groove is present on the internal and external fa…

Gold finger ring / 'posy ring' with incised inscription on interior face dated to the early modern period (post 1708). The finger-ring is formed from a D shaped section hoop of gold, being circular in plan. The edges of the ring have been slightly abraded and have small notches cut into the band caused by the movement in the soil. The inscription is incised into the internal face of the ring and is cut in an italic hand. It reads: God for me apoynted thee. The letters are slightly florid with slight embellished scrolls. After the inscription is a single rectangular stamped cartouche, …

A gold finger ring with turquoise / aquamarine stone and decayed niello decoration of early modern date (c. 1750-1850). The hoop of the finger ring is sub-circular (slightly oval) in plan and D shaped in cross section. It is regular in both width and thickness; at the shoulder of the ring both sides flare to form a much thickened bezel with a hollowed centre which holds a small oval blue – turquoise or aquamarine stone. The stone is held by four clasps / grips and the edges of the outer shoulder are decorated with floral scrolls. The hoop of the ring in plan measures 18.6mm lengt…
