A cast copper alloy sword pommel or possibly a furniture finial of modern date. The style of the piece suggests that it fits well with the Neo-Gothic period. The pommel is broadly spherical in shape having a oval / circular perforation at the base and a small rectangular hole at the top. The pommel is hollow, it is filled with a large amount of iron corrosion from the remains of the tang, the tip of which passes through the square aperture at the top terminating in a neat pyramidal boss. The exterior of the pommel is decorated with a series of equally spaced curved arcs / circles whi…

Cut sheet copper alloy shoe or clog clasp (male fitting), which would have been used with a similar hasp (female fitting) to secure a wooden shoe (overshoe) to the foot. The clasp is rectangular with a small incomplete sub-rectangular projection (hook) on one edge and an irregular lozenge shaped projection at the other. The small hook is abraded and incomplete; at the opposite end, the projection is broadly shaped like an anchor and was used to secure the clasp to the fabric. The surface of the hasp has worn away so that it is difficult to make out any decoration. The remains of a ser…

Obv: A circular blob with point extension at one end - a leaf. Between a letter on left and an E on right. The blobby thing maybe contained within a wreath. Cast silver seal of late Georgian date (1725-1800). The seal is formed with a oval seal face which extends in a graceful tapering stem terminating in a expanded plate with two projecting studs which would have fitted into an organic, wood or bone / ivory, handle. The face of the matrix is engraved with a stylised N with ornate floral curvi-linear scrolls embellishing it. The design is well cut and detailed. As this artefact is not more than 300 years old it does not qualify as treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act. Thanks are extended to Dora Thornton, British Museum, for her commen…

A detailed report for this spur has been provided by Blanche Ellis (a specialist in the study of spurs and horse equipment / furniture). The report is copied below in its entirety. Sincere thanks are extended to Ms Ellis for the detailed information and parallels provided for this unusual and relatively rare rowel spur. Spur with Horizontal Rowel. The body of the spur is silver with the rusted remains of an iron rowel. The spur sides are straight, of flat section deepest at their junction with the neck of the spur. The sides taper forward, each having a disc-shaped term…
