A cast copper alloy seal of post-medieval to modern date. The seal is a thick disc incised on one face with a thin circular border. Within this border are two anchors possitioned at opposite sides of the object. The letters "sh" are also visable close to the border above and between the anchors. The other face is very worn and appears to be undecorated. As a seal from the Georgian period it was most probably used to secure document parchments such as navigation charts, maps or ships manifests, as suggested by Rod Bott, Curatorial Assistant, Bayle Maritime Museum. Another po…

A cast copper alloy unidentified object of modern date. The object is crescent shaped in section and is decorated with a screw thread-like design, though this is too irregular to have been functional. It is likely that this is only one half of a hollow cylindrical object. The most likely option is that this fragment is shrapnel from a Second World War anti-aircraft shell or similar. Numerous similar threaded fragments have been found at WWII battery sites in England. The metal is a mid brownish-green colour and is worn. The object is 13.4mm long, 10.6mm wide, 2.4mm thick and weighs…

37 sherds of a handmade ceramic vessel of modern date. The sherds are from a hematite burnished ware vessel with an oxidized fabric. The inclusions are small, circular and light coloured (white) and are likely to be quartzite. Some ovate voids are present and the fabric is quite hard. Many of the sherds can be fitted together giving an estimated diameter of 14cm suggesting the vessel was a small and shallow bowl or dish. Hematite was extensively used in antiquity to colour the surface of pottery. Most frequently, the pulverized pigment was applied to the surface of a leather-hard …
