Copper alloy nail head. Pressed metal head of a ‘fancy nail’, as they are described in a catalogue of 1907, with its edges slightly crimped. The plate takes the form of a cross crosslet or Cross of Jerusalem; though a badge used by the Knights Templar, this is unrelated to their interesting activities and is one of a series of arcane motifs used for these decorative items, which may be compared to drawing pins in their possible uses. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1910 Height: 18.2mm, Width: 18.6mm, Thickness: 0.4mm, Weight: 0.83gms

Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. A pointed leaf-shaped plate with vertical edges and a central fixing point marked by a spot of rust. The object is bent sharply at one end, where it is broken. The crisp edges might suggest a function as a part from machinery. Object type: TOY
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy possible toy fragment. Cast trough or scoop with a reinforcing bar behind its blade with a central moulded fitting retaining rust traces, suggesting the passage of an inserted steel wire, and hence a requirement for reinforcement at this point. This might be from a toy, perhaps a vehicle such as a model mechanical excavator or an item of dolls house furniture; the use of lead alloy tends to point to a representative function rather than a robust mechanical one. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Length: 27.2mm, Width: 20.6mm, Thickness (at bar): 2.2mm, Weight: 6.27gms

Copper alloy mount. Lead bullet, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast cylindrical round-nosed bullet with two circumferential rings around its base. Patinated. Probably for use with a revolver of 0.35 inch calibre, though a 9mm diameter might also point to a round for the Sten gun, which was designed to use captured German 9mm calibre ammunition, and which might have found its way into the hands of the Home Guard later in the Second World War. Lead offcut. A cast cylinder of lead with a concave moulded end and a cleanly broken end. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its recent date. Copper alloy strap fitting. A pressed metal oval plate with two rectangular apertures for the passage of a light strap. Rays appear on the back at one outer edge. Copper alloy nail head. Pressed metal hollow-backed decorative nail head, in the form of a Cross of Jerusalem or cross crosslet, with the arms of the figure outlined by a sunken line of dots. The function is confirmed by a central scar and surrounding rust staining on the back. This is a slightly larger than usual version of a Victorian object type, though the Templar affinities of the motif have often promoted the wishful ascription of a medieval date to these objects. Lead alloy possible coin. Cast disc, flat on one side and with an irregular moulded surface on the other; retaining a grey tint. This may be a cast forgery intended to resemble a Celtic coin of the Corieltauvi. Large numbers of these fakes have been reported from areas frequented by metal detectorists in the northern part of Lincolnshire, and their distribution from a suspected ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area may have taken place in the course of rivalry between detectorists. This may be the first such object to be reported from Wyham cum Cadeby parish, though objects have been recorde…

Copper alloy button. Pressed metal uniform button of composite construction, possibly a General Service button, with a convex front bearing the Royal Arms, a convex back plate with stamped maker’s details and a U-shaped drawn wire loop which passes into it. Many uniform buttons were deposited along with ‘shoddy’ – discarded fabric; in this case old uniforms – which was used in the belief that it would improve soil as it decayed. The cheaper grades of shoddy were not stripped of metal fittings before being put on the land. Many buttons were thus deposited, in particular at th…

Lead alloy coins. Two probably cast uniface modern forgeries [of diameter 22.6mm and weight 7.71gms and diameter 18.3mm and weight 3.32gms] representing the discombobulated or Celticised horse reverse of later Iron Age coins of the Corieltauvi. These objects appear to have been distruibuted in large numbers across land frequented by metal detector users. A ‘mint’ in the Grimsby area is suspected.
